History
Autodesk was established in April 1982 by John Walker, Daniel Drake, and a larger group of programmers who invested in a new software venture. Walker had acquired rights connected with Interact, a microcomputer computer-aided-design program developed by Michael Riddle. The software had run on early CP/M and IBM-compatible personal computers. It was further developed and renamed AutoCAD, positioning professional technical drawing on comparatively affordable personal hardware. At the company’s debut at the 1982 COMDEX trade show in Las Vegas, AutoCAD attracted considerably more attention than the other applications Autodesk displayed. The company consequently concentrated on CAD. AutoCAD went on sale in December 1982 and quickly became the center of Autodesk’s business. Its availability on personal computers, support for technical drafting, and extensibility made it attractive to architecture, engineering, and manufacturing users that could not or did not want to deploy large proprietary CAD systems. The acquisition of Discreet Logic and later Alias brought technologies associated with visual effects, animation, digital content creation, industrial styling, and game production. Maya and 3ds Max became prominent tools in animation, visual effects, visualization, and game development. Acquisitions such as Mudbox, Softimage-related assets, Scaleform, and other specialist technologies added sculpting, animation, rendering, interface, and production capabilities. In the 2000s and 2010s Autodesk increasingly developed cloud, mobile, collaboration, simulation, and generative-design capabilities. It acquired or developed technologies for online CAD access, building collaboration, product lifecycle management, computational design, image processing, and engineering analysis. Products such as Fusion connected design and manufacturing workflows, while cloud services supported distributed project teams and centralized project information. Autodesk faced a notable software-licensing dispute in Vernor v. Autodesk. The case concerned the resale of used copies of Autodesk software acquired through an office liquidation. A lower court initially found for the reseller, but the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit reversed that result, holding that Autodesk’s licensing restrictions prevented the claimed resale right. The United States Supreme Court declined to disturb the appellate ruling in 2011. The company later moved much of its business from perpetual licenses toward subscription access. This strategy was intended to provide recurring access to current software, cloud services, support, and continuous updates, but it also changed customer purchasing patterns and attracted criticism from some users accustomed to perpetual licenses. Autodesk has continued to position itself as a connected platform for the design and manufacture of buildings, infrastructure, products, and media, with growing emphasis on cloud computing, automation, generative design, and artificial intelligence. Its headquarters moved from San Rafael to San Francisco in 2022.
