Overview
AUO Corporation, commonly known as AUO, is a Taiwan-based optoelectronics company whose historical core business is the design and manufacture of thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display panels. The company originated with Acer Display Technology, founded in August 1996, and became AUO in September 2001 through the merger of Acer Display Technology and Unipac Optoelectronics Corporation. It later broadened its scale and manufacturing base through the 2006 merger with Quanta Display. For much of its history, AUO was identified primarily with large- and medium-sized TFT-LCD panels used in televisions, computer monitors, notebook computers, tablets, mobile devices, and other electronic equipment. Its customers and industrial partners operate across the global information-technology, consumer-electronics, automotive, industrial, and commercial-display value chains. The company has developed manufacturing and sales capabilities across Taiwan, mainland China, Singapore, Japan, North America, and Europe. AUO's portfolio has progressively moved beyond conventional LCD capacity. It includes advanced TFT technologies, LTPS displays, AMOLED-related development, flexible displays, Mini LED and Micro LED technologies, touch and interactive displays, ePaper-related solutions, automotive displays, cockpit electronics, industrial and commercial displays, smart-retail systems, healthcare and education applications, solar-energy products, environmental and circular-economy services, and smart-manufacturing solutions. The company also works through subsidiaries and affiliated businesses covering precision components, LED and optoelectronic technologies, energy, digital signage, and industrial solutions. A central part of AUO's transformation has been its effort to become a technology and solutions provider rather than a company competing mainly on panel volume and price. AUO describes this direction through a two-axis strategy: “Go Premium,” which emphasizes higher-value display technologies and products, and “Go Vertical,” which applies display, sensing, software, manufacturing, and service capabilities to specific industries. Its vertical focus areas include smart mobility, industrial intelligence, smart retail, healthcare, education, energy, and sustainability. The automotive business has become one of AUO's most important expansion areas. The company has supplied automotive display technologies for more than two decades and has developed display human-machine interfaces, curved and integrated cockpit displays, advanced backlighting, touch functions, and Micro LED applications. In October 2023, AUO agreed to acquire Behr-Hella Thermocontrol GmbH, a German supplier of automotive human-machine interfaces, climate-control systems, and electronic control units. The transaction, valued at an enterprise value of €600 million, was completed in April 2024 and gave AUO full ownership of BHTC. The combination was intended to connect AUO's display expertise with automotive electronics and software-enabled cockpit systems. AUO has also created dedicated organizations to support diversification. AUO Display Plus was established as a wholly owned subsidiary after the demerger of the general-display and public-information-display businesses. In November 2024, AUO announced the establishment of AUO Mobility Solution Corporation to support the development of its automotive and smart-mobility activities. The group has additionally pursued investments and acquisitions in digital signage, industrial technology, healthcare, energy, and other adjacent areas. As of 2026, AUO remains an active publicly listed Taiwanese technology company. Its group leadership is headed by Chairman and Group Chief Executive Officer Shuang-Lang (Paul) Peng. Following Frank Ko's resignation as president for personal reasons, AUO appointed David B.Y. Chang, previously its chief financial officer, as president effective July 31, 2026. AUO's current corporate narrative emphasize…
History
AUO's corporate history begins with Acer Display Technology, established in Taiwan in August 1996 as a display-panel business associated with the Acer technology group. The company entered the public markets in September 2000 through a listing on the Taiwan Stock Exchange. Its early development coincided with the rapid adoption of flat-panel displays in computers, televisions, and mobile devices, an environment that favored large investments in fabrication capacity, process engineering, and global customer relationships. In September 2001, Acer Display Technology merged with Unipac Optoelectronics Corporation. The combined company adopted the AU Optronics identity and became one of Taiwan's principal display-panel manufacturers. The merger strengthened its technical base and production scale at a time when TFT-LCD technology was replacing cathode-ray-tube products across consumer electronics. AUO subsequently expanded through the October 2006 merger with Quanta Display Inc., increasing its manufacturing footprint and customer reach. During the late 2000s, AUO began adding businesses outside its traditional panel focus. In December 2008, it entered the solar business. It formed a joint venture with Changhong in Sichuan in June 2009 to establish a module plant and another joint venture with TCL in April 2010. In July 2010, AUO acquired AFPD Pte. Ltd., a Singapore subsidiary of Toshiba Mobile Display, strengthening its regional production and mobile-display capabilities. In February 2012, AUO and Japan's Idemitsu Kosan formed a strategic OLED alliance, reflecting the industry's search for alternatives and complements to conventional LCD technology. AUO's diversification continued through energy, sustainability, and manufacturing initiatives. In April 2014, it established Star River Energy Corporation to develop a new solar-power-plant operating model. In 2014, its corporate-responsibility reporting received a GRI G4 certificate described by the company as the first of its kind in Taiwan's manufacturing sector. In December 2015, AUO completed a process-water full-recycling system at its Lungtan facility, illustrating the importance of resource efficiency in a water-intensive semiconductor and display-manufacturing environment. The company continued to invest in advanced displays and regional manufacturing during the second half of the 2010s. It opened and expanded LTPS LCD capacity in Kunshan, China, and established a Global Research Center in 2017. In 2018, AUO acquired ComQi, a content-management services company, supporting its move into digital signage and commercial-display solutions. In 2019, it completed a share conversion that resulted in full ownership of AUO Crystal Corporation. The same year, AUO voluntarily delisted its American depositary receipts from the New York Stock Exchange and transferred them to the U.S. over-the-counter market. In 2020, AUO publicly acquired approximately 19.45% of ADLINK Technology, extending its connections to industrial computing and intelligent systems. In January 2021, the general-display and public-information-display businesses were demerged into AUO Display Plus, a wholly owned subsidiary intended to give those businesses more focused commercial and organizational development. Later in 2021, AUO acquired the remaining 49% of AU Optronics Kunshan, bringing the subsidiary under full ownership. In June 2022, the listed company changed its legal name from AU Optronics Corporation to AUO Corporation, while retaining the AUO identity. The 2020s have been defined by strategic transformation. AUO has presented its approach as a combination of premium display technology and vertical-market expansion. Micro LED, flexible displays, ePaper, automotive displays, smart retail, healthcare, industrial intelligence, energy, and circular-economy services have become increasingly prominent in its public strategy. In October 2023, the board approved the acquisition of Germany's Behr-Hella Thermocontrol at an enterprise value of €600 million. The transaction closed in April 2024, giving AUO full ownership of BHTC and adding automotive human-machine interfaces, climate-control systems, and electronic-control units to its portfolio. AUO subsequently established AUO Mobility Solution Corporation in November 2024 to support its automotive and smart-mobility ambitions. The group has also pursued further vertical expansion, including approval in 2024 for AUO Display Plus Netherlands B.V. to acquire equity in Avocor Technologies USA, a commercial-display and collaboration-technology company. AUO's strategic structure in 2026 centers on Display, Mobility Solutions, and Vertical Solutions, supported by global operations and an innovation and new-venture function. Leadership has also evolved. Paul Peng, who became chairman in 2015, serves as chairman and group chief executive officer. Frank Ko served as president and group chief operating officer until his resignation in July 2026. David B.Y. Chang, previously chief financial officer, became president effective July 31, 2026. Through this period, AUO has retained display manufacturing as its foundation while attempting to build a broader technology ecosystem spanning mobility, industrial applications, retail, healthcare, energy, sustainability, and advanced manufacturing.
