Overview
Audio-Technica is a Japanese audio equipment manufacturer established in 1962 by Hideo Matsushita in Tokyo. The company began as a specialist maker of phonograph cartridges, initially producing the AT-1 and AT-3 moving-magnet stereo cartridges. It later expanded into headphones, professional and broadcast microphones, turntables, wireless systems, digital audio products, accessories, and commercial audio integration solutions. The business moved its headquarters and factory to Naruse in Machida, Tokyo, in 1965. During its early years, Audio-Technica developed test records, tone-arm products, and moving-magnet cartridge technology, helping it build relationships with domestic audio manufacturers and overseas distributors. Its 1967 AT-35X cartridge used the company’s distinctive VM design and supported the expansion of exports. By 1969, the company was exporting phono cartridges internationally and had also entered the microcassette recorder market. Audio-Technica established a United States operation in 1972 and began supplying cartridges to European manufacturers. It introduced its first headphones, the AT-700 series, in 1974, followed by additional dynamic headphone models and the AT-34 dual-moving-coil cartridge in the following years. The introduction of the AT-800 microphone series in 1978 marked a significant move into the commercial microphone market. International expansion continued through a United Kingdom operation, a Taiwan subsidiary, and a Southeast Asian establishment in Singapore. As digital music reduced the long-term importance of the traditional phonograph-cartridge market, Audio-Technica diversified. One unusual result was the development of sushi-making machinery. The company’s AUTEC business became a major producer of equipment for forming and processing sushi in commercial and industrial settings, while Audio-Technica continued to develop its core audio portfolio. This diversification illustrates the company’s broader engineering approach rather than a strictly audio-only business model. In professional audio, the company became known for studio condenser microphones, broadcast products, wireless systems, instrument microphones, headphones, and conference-room solutions. Product families such as the AT2020 microphone, AT4033 and AT4050 studio microphones, ATH-M series monitor headphones, and AT-LP series turntables helped it serve musicians, recording engineers, broadcasters, DJs, podcasters, consumers, and educational and corporate users. Its microphones have also been used for major television productions, award ceremonies, public events, and United States presidential debates. Audio-Technica has repeatedly combined traditional analog products with newer digital formats. It developed noise-resistant microphone technology, USB microphones, digital-to-analog converters, wireless headphones, truly wireless earbuds, streaming products, and ceiling-array conference microphones. The company also revived its portable Sound Burger record player, first associated with the 1980s, as a Bluetooth-enabled rechargeable product in 2022. In parallel, it has maintained higher-end analog offerings, including moving-coil cartridges, wooden headphones, premium turntables, and limited-edition anniversary products. The brand is positioned across consumer, enthusiast, and professional segments. Its products are generally associated with practical engineering, broad compatibility, extensive model coverage, and a balance between performance and price. The company remains active in global audio markets, with offerings spanning home listening, vinyl playback, recording, live sound, broadcast, content creation, business conferencing, and installed audio.
History
Audio-Technica was founded in 1962 in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district by Hideo Matsushita as a manufacturer of phonograph cartridges. Its first products were the AT-1 and AT-3 moving-magnet stereo cartridges. The company quickly began supplying cartridges to Japanese audio manufacturers and moved its headquarters and factory to Naruse in Machida, Tokyo, in 1965. That year it also received an industrial award connected with its AT-1001 tone-arm package. The company developed supporting products and technologies during the 1960s. In 1966 it released the Moving Pulse test record, intended to demonstrate cartridge and playback quality. In 1967 it introduced the AT-35X, described as its first VM-type stereo cartridge. The design helped drive overseas growth, and related patent protection extended into several European and North American jurisdictions. Audio-Technica began worldwide cartridge exports in 1969 and also entered the microcassette recorder field. International development accelerated during the 1970s. Audio-Technica established its United States operation in Fairlawn, Ohio, in 1972 and supplied VM cartridges to European manufacturers. It entered headphones with the AT-700 series in 1974 and broadened the line with later dynamic models. In 1977 it introduced the AT-34 dual-moving-coil cartridge. The AT-800 microphone series, launched in 1978, brought the company into commercial microphones, while its United Kingdom operation began in Leeds that year. The company diversified in the 1980s as the growth of digital music threatened the centrality of phonograph cartridges. Employee suggestions led to the development of sushi machinery, including the ASM50 Nigirikko home appliance introduced in 1984. This business developed into AUTEC, a maker of sushi-forming and related commercial equipment. Audio-Technica nevertheless continued investing in audio engineering, including moving-coil cartridges, high-purity copper cabling, and PCOCC-based cartridge products. The AT-OC9, introduced in 1987, became the starting point for a cartridge family that later evolved into the AT-OC9X range. During the 1990s, Audio-Technica expanded its studio microphone portfolio. Important models included the AT4033 cardioid condenser microphone in 1991, the AT4050 multipattern condenser in 1995, and the AT4060 vacuum-tube cardioid microphone in 1998. In 1999 the company introduced the AT895, a DSP-controlled five-element microphone array designed for adaptive directional sound acquisition. The company also expanded its international structure, including a Southeast Asian operation in Singapore in 1996. In 1993, Hideo Matsushita became chairman and his son Kazuo Matsushita became president. Audio-Technica’s professional profile grew through microphone and headphone supply for television, broadcasting, ceremonies, and major public events. The company supplied microphones for United States presidential debates from 1988 onward and marked two decades of that relationship in 2008. In 2005 it introduced Uniguard radio-frequency-interference resistance technology, developed through changes to microphone construction and operation and applied across many models. The 2000s and 2010s brought further movement into portable, digital, and wireless listening. Audio-Technica released early earbuds and noise-cancelling headphones in 2006 and 2007. In 2012, its 50th-anniversary presentation at CES included several limited-edition products. The company released a new generation of M-Series monitor headphones in 2014, including the ATH-M20x, ATH-M30x, ATH-M40x, and ATH-M50x. It also introduced the LP120USBC USB turntable, which enabled vinyl conversion to digital files. At CES 2017 the company introduced a broad set of high-resolution and wireless headphones, including the Sound Reality series and digital-drive ATH-DSR models. It partnered with Audient on the AT2035-Studio Essential Studio Kit. In 2019 it presented new turntables, microphone bundles, and truly wireless headphones. In 2020 it introduced the ATH-CK3TW wireless earbuds and expanded the portfolio of distributed brands in several European markets through Audio Pro Business. Audio-Technica continued to address creators and commercial users in the 2020s. Products introduced in 2021 included the AT-BHA100 balanced headphone amplifier, AT-DAC100 converter, and AT2040 hypercardioid dynamic microphone for podcasts, voice-over, and conferencing. In 2022 the company marked its 60th anniversary with the AT-LP2022 limited-edition acrylic turntable and the return of the Sound Burger. At InfoComm 2023 it demonstrated wireless conferencing and ceiling-array solutions compatible with major room-platform configurations. New 2024 products included wireless in-ear monitoring, USB microphones, StreamSet headphones, and premium wooden headphones. The company’s later product activity also extended into on-camera microphones and high-end turntables.
