Overview
Atacadão is a Brazilian cash-and-carry retail brand specializing in bulk and low-price sales of groceries, household products and other everyday goods. It was founded in 1962 in Maringá, Paraná, by Alcides Parizotto. The business initially developed as a wholesale-oriented store network serving both commercial customers and households, a format that has remained central to its identity. Its name and operating model are associated with warehouse-style stores, broad assortments, high-volume purchasing and price-sensitive shopping. Parizotto led the organization until 1991. After his departure, ownership passed to the Lima family and executives Farid Curi and Herberto Uli Schmeil. The company subsequently became one of Brazil's prominent wholesale-retail operators. Carrefour Group acquired Atacadão in 2007 for approximately R$2.2 billion, making the chain a major component of Carrefour's Brazilian business and its expansion in the country's value-focused food retail segment. Under Carrefour ownership, Atacadão continued to expand its store network and distribution infrastructure. A 2010 account described the business as operating 102 stores and seven distribution centers across 26 Brazilian states. Its scale, warehouse format and pricing proposition have positioned it against other Brazilian cash-and-carry operators, particularly Assaí Atacadista. In 2020, Carrefour acquired 30 Makro stores and 14 associated fuel stations for approximately R$1.95 billion, with the stated strategic effect of strengthening Atacadão's presence, especially in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil's Northeast. The brand has also been used outside Brazil, although the ownership and operating structures vary by market. Atacadão Maroc is operated by Morocco's LabelVie group and traces its development to the replacement of Metro Maroc and Carrefour Maxi operations. It had 20 locations according to the cited reference material in 2025. Carrefour also introduced the Atacadão format in France, opening its first French store on 20 June 2024 at the O'Parinor shopping centre in Aulnay-sous-Bois. The French launch was presented as a response to inflation and pressure on household purchasing power, and followed public debate in the surrounding municipalities about the conversion of Carrefour stores to the format. Atacadão marked 60 years of activity on 12 April 2022 and was reported at that time to employ more than 60,000 people. Its core proposition remains straightforward: combine warehouse-scale operations and high-volume purchasing with competitive prices for families, small businesses, restaurants and other professional buyers. The brand's principal significance within Carrefour is its role as a large-format, price-led food and general-merchandise platform rather than as a premium supermarket or specialist retailer.
History
Atacadão began in 1962 in Maringá, in the Brazilian state of Paraná. Its founder, Alcides Parizotto, developed the business around a wholesale-oriented store model that supplied food and everyday merchandise in volume. The format later became known as cash-and-carry: customers accept a warehouse environment and often handle transport themselves in exchange for competitive prices. This model enabled Atacadão to address both professional buyers and ordinary households. Parizotto remained in charge until 1991. Following his departure, the business was acquired by the Lima family together with executives Farid Curi and Herberto Uli Schmeil. Under this ownership structure, Atacadão continued to develop as a national Brazilian chain. Carrefour Group purchased the company in 2007 for approximately R$2.2 billion. The acquisition gave Carrefour a large, established platform in Brazil's value-oriented wholesale and grocery market and made Atacadão an important part of the group's local retail strategy. The chain expanded its physical network and logistics capabilities during the Carrefour period. By 2010, reference material described Atacadão as having 102 stores and seven distribution centres in 26 Brazilian states. Its large stores and broad assortment allowed the brand to sell food, beverages, cleaning supplies, personal-care items and other merchandise in consumer and commercial quantities. Its main Brazilian competitor identified in the reference material is Assaí Atacadista. A further expansion step came in 2020, when Carrefour acquired 30 Makro stores and 14 fuel stations for approximately R$1.95 billion. The transaction was intended to increase Atacadão's market presence, particularly in Rio de Janeiro and the Northeast. The use of existing Makro locations also provided a route to scale the cash-and-carry format more rapidly than a purely organic rollout. The Atacadão name has been used in additional markets. In Morocco, Atacadão Maroc is associated with LabelVie, a local retail group. The Moroccan operation developed after the replacement of Metro Maroc and Carrefour Maxi formats and expanded to 20 locations according to the cited 2025 reference. The brand also had historical operations in Argentina and Colombia. In Argentina, the name was replaced by Carrefour Maxi. In Colombia, Atacadão stores were rebranded first as Carrefour Maxi and later Maxi; after Carrefour sold its Colombian assets to Cencosud in 2012, the four former locations were closed in March 2013 and later associated with the Easy brand. Carrefour pursued a renewed international use of the format in France. In 2023, plans to convert a Carrefour store in Sevran generated opposition from the local mayor and petitions from residents, while nearby Aulnay-sous-Bois supported the concept. The first French Atacadão store ultimately opened in Aulnay-sous-Bois on 20 June 2024, at the O'Parinor shopping centre. The launch was framed around the need for lower prices during a period of inflation and declining purchasing power. Atacadão celebrated its 60th anniversary on 12 April 2022 and was reported to have more than 60,000 employees at that point. Today, the brand's identity is built around high-volume procurement, warehouse operations, broad everyday assortments and low prices. Within Carrefour Group, it functions as a major cash-and-carry and discount-retail platform, with Brazil as its historical and principal market and additional operations or format deployments in Morocco and France.
