Overview
Armada Music is a Dutch independent record label and music company focused primarily on electronic dance music. Founded in 2003 by producer Armin van Buuren, music executive Maykel Piron and music manager David Lewis, the company took its name from the first two letters of each founder's first name: Armin, Maykel and David. It developed from a label associated closely with trance and progressive electronic music into a broader international platform covering recorded music, artist releases, publishing, catalog investment and a network of specialist imprints. The label's early identity was strongly connected with Armin van Buuren and the global growth of trance. Its activities expanded through labels and artist platforms serving different parts of the electronic music spectrum, including Armada Captivating, Armada Chill, Armada Electronic Elements, Armada Subjekt, Armind, A State of Trance, DAYS like NIGHTS, Delecta Records, Flashover Recordings, SONO Music, Who's Afraid of 138? and other affiliated imprints. The wider label family has allowed Armada to work across trance, progressive house, melodic house, techno, chill-out and adjacent dance styles rather than operate as a single-genre imprint. Armada is headquartered in Amsterdam and has also maintained offices in New York, London and Laren in the Netherlands. Its represented artists have included Armin van Buuren, Arty, D.O.D, Eelke Kleijn, Jan Blomqvist, Joris Voorn, KI/KI, Lilly Palmer, Loud Luxury, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, THEMBA and Yulia Niko. The roster reflects the company's movement beyond its original trance-centered reputation toward a wider contemporary electronic-music portfolio. The company has also pursued recognition and influence beyond individual releases. By December 2015, it had received the International Dance Music Award for Best Global Record Label for five consecutive years. In 2014, the Academy of Electronic Music, a joint venture involving Armada, Google, Point Blank and DJ Mag, received a People's Voice Award at the Webby Awards. Armada was subsequently included among labels highlighted by the IMPALA FIVEUNDERFIFTEEN initiative in 2016 and received the IMPALA Young Label Spotlight Award. In 2023, Armada expanded into music-rights investment by launching BEAT Music Fund, described by the company as a dance-music investment company. Initial acquisitions included the master-recordings catalog of Kevin Saunderson's KMS Records and the master and publishing catalog associated with Arty, also known as Alpha 9. Later in 2023, BEAT acquired New York house label King Street Sounds and the master and publishing catalog of Dutch dance duo Chocolate Puma. In April 2024, Armada established Armada Music Group as a parent structure encompassing its label, publishing and investment activities. The same announcement included the acquisition of Amsterdam-based publisher Cloud 9 Music, whose publishing division was merged into Armada Music Publishing. In 2025, BEAT Music Fund acquired the master-rights catalog of Mixmash Records, while Armada partnered with Simon Dunmore to launch NBT Records from its London creative hub. Armada also acquired worldwide rights to the catalog of British singer-songwriter and DJ Sonique. These moves indicate a strategy centered on building a diversified rights, publishing and label ecosystem around electronic and dance music.
History
Armada Music was established in the Netherlands in 2003 by Armin van Buuren, Maykel Piron and David Lewis. The name was formed from the first two letters of the founders' names. From its foundation, the company operated as an independent label with a strong emphasis on electronic dance music, particularly the trance and progressive styles associated with van Buuren's international career. As its catalog and artist network grew, Armada developed a multi-imprint structure. Labels such as Armind, A State of Trance, Armada Captivating, Armada Chill, Armada Electronic Elements, Armada Subjekt, DAYS like NIGHTS, Flashover Recordings and Who's Afraid of 138? enabled the group to release music across distinct dance subgenres and audience communities. Other listed labels included All I Need, Delecta Records, SONO Music, slash and King Street Sounds. The company also expanded its physical presence beyond Amsterdam through offices in New York, London and Laren. Armada's profile was reinforced by industry recognition. By 2015, the label had won the International Dance Music Award for Best Global Record Label five years in succession. A related Academy of Electronic Music initiative, created with Google, Point Blank and DJ Mag, received the People's Voice Award at the 2014 Webby Awards. In 2016, Armada was among the European labels recognized through IMPALA's FIVEUNDERFIFTEEN initiative and received the IMPALA Young Label Spotlight Award. The company began moving more explicitly into music-rights investment in 2023. On 20 April of that year, it launched BEAT Music Fund, presented as a dance-music investment company. The fund's first acquisitions included the master-recordings catalog of KMS Records, associated with Kevin Saunderson, and the master and publishing catalog of Arty, who is also known as Alpha 9. In June 2023, BEAT acquired King Street Sounds, a New York house label, together with the master and publishing catalog of Chocolate Puma. In April 2024, Armada announced Armada Music Group as a parent organization for its label, publishing and investment activities. The announcement also covered the acquisition of Amsterdam-based publisher Cloud 9 Music. Cloud 9's publishing division was merged into Armada Music Publishing, extending the company's activities from label releases into a more integrated rights and publishing operation. The expansion continued in 2025. BEAT Music Fund acquired the complete master-rights catalog of Mixmash Records, founded by Laidback Luke and Olga Heijns. Armada then partnered with Simon Dunmore, the former founder of Defected Records, to launch NBT Records from its London creative hub. Later in the year, Armada acquired worldwide rights to the catalog of Sonique, including "It Feels So Good." These developments show a transition from a conventional independent label toward a broader music group built around repertoire, publishing, artist releases, sub-labels and catalog ownership.
