Overview
ARAG is a Düsseldorf-based European insurance group whose name derives from Allgemeine Rechtsschutzversicherungs Aktiengesellschaft. Founded in 1935 as Deutsche Auto-Rechtsschutz-AG by Düsseldorf entrepreneur and attorney Heinrich Fassbender, the company initially focused on legal expenses insurance for motorists. Its founding rationale was that access to legal remedies should not be limited to people with substantial financial means. That principle became the basis for a business built around funding legal advice, representation and related costs for individuals, households and businesses. The company expanded beyond automobile-related legal protection in 1948 and entered additional insurance segments in 1962. It also began taking the legal-expenses concept outside Germany during the 1960s, gradually developing an international network of subsidiaries and operating companies. Life insurance was added from 1965, while private health insurance became a major business from 1985. The life business was later sold to Frankfurter Leben Group, retroactive to 1 January 2017, leaving legal protection, health insurance and composite property-and-casualty insurance as the principal areas of activity. ARAG SE is the operating holding company for the group's legal-protection operations, while ARAG Holding SE serves as the asset and investment-management parent and legal head of the group. In Germany, ARAG Krankenversicherungs-AG provides private health insurance, and ARAG Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG offers composite insurance products including liability, household contents, accident, pet health, building and business insurance. The group also has a substantial sports-insurance position; ARAG Allgemeine covers more than 20 million amateur and professional athletes through relevant insurance arrangements. Internationally, ARAG operates through subsidiaries, branches and specialist companies in Europe, North America and other markets. Its United States business originated in a group legal product developed in the 1970s and became part of ARAG through an acquisition in 1989. The group entered Canada as an insurance intermediary in 2016 and acquired DAS's Canadian operations in 2021. In the United Kingdom, ARAG has operated since 2006 and expanded through portfolio acquisitions and the purchase of D.A.S. UK from ERGO in 2023. It entered Ireland in 2019 through the acquisition of D.A.S.'s Irish operations. ARAG began operating in Australia in 2019 through an underwriting agency but exited that market in 2025 after the business failed to develop as expected. The group moved into the ARAG Tower in Düsseldorf in 2001. Designed by Lord Norman Foster with the Düsseldorf practice RKW, the building became a prominent symbol of the company's headquarters and corporate identity. In December 2011, the operating company was converted into a European Company, or Societas Europaea, and adopted the ARAG SE designation. ARAG remains family-controlled, with Paul-Otto Fassbender, grandson of the founder, as its principal shareholder. Renko Dirksen became Speaker of the Board of Management in 2020 and was appointed Chairman of the Board in 2025. At the end of 2024, the group reported gross premium income of €2.843 billion, managed 13.8 million policies and employed more than 6,100 people worldwide. The group describes itself as the largest family-owned German insurance group and is widely associated internationally with legal expenses insurance.
History
ARAG was established in Düsseldorf in 1935 by attorney and entrepreneur Heinrich Fassbender under the name Deutsche Auto-Rechtsschutz-AG, commonly abbreviated as DARAG. The company was created to provide motorists with financial protection against legal costs. Fassbender's guiding idea was that ordinary citizens should be able to assert their rights even when they could not personally afford litigation. This made legal expenses insurance the defining commercial and social foundation of the enterprise. In 1948, ARAG broadened its coverage beyond strictly automotive legal disputes. The change allowed the company to address a wider range of private legal conflicts and laid the groundwork for its later identity as a general legal-protection specialist. In 1962, the group expanded into additional insurance classes and began promoting legal expenses insurance outside Germany. Internationalization subsequently became a central part of ARAG's development, with subsidiaries and operating companies established across Europe and in North America. The group entered life insurance in 1965 and private health insurance in 1985. These moves transformed ARAG from a focused legal-protection provider into a broader insurance group. Acquisitions were used to build capabilities in the new segments, while the original legal-protection business remained the group's best-known specialty. The life-insurance operation was ultimately sold to Frankfurter Leben Group in 2017, with the transaction treated as effective from 1 January of that year. ARAG opened a major new headquarters in Düsseldorf in 2001. The ARAG Tower was designed by Lord Norman Foster together with Düsseldorf-based RKW and became one of the most recognizable elements of the group's corporate presence. In December 2011, the operating company changed from ARAG Allgemeine Rechtsschutz-Versicherungs-AG to ARAG SE, reflecting its conversion into a Societas Europaea and its increasingly cross-border organization. The international business expanded through both organic development and acquisitions. In the United States, a legal-protection product was developed in the 1970s within Midwest Mutual Insurance Company, and ARAG acquired that organization in 1989. The resulting ARAG USA business became one of the group's important non-European operations. ARAG entered Canada in 2016 as an insurance intermediary and strengthened its position there by acquiring DAS's Canadian operations in 2021. The United Kingdom became another important market. ARAG established its British presence in 2006, initially covering product development, distribution, marketing and underwriting. It later acquired the legal-expenses portfolio of Capita and the specialist after-the-event provider ATE Ltd. In 2023, ARAG purchased D.A.S. UK from ERGO, including its law firm, broadening the group's in-house legal and insurance capabilities in Britain. ARAG entered Ireland in 2019 by acquiring D.A.S.'s Irish operations and establishing ARAG Legal Protection Ltd. in Dublin. The group also developed operations throughout continental Europe, including Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. In Australia, ARAG launched an underwriting-agency business in 2019 for broker and intermediary-distributed legal policies covering commercial, private, landlord and online risks. The group withdrew from Australia in 2025 because the operation had not achieved the expected development. ARAG's German operations combine legal protection with private health insurance and composite property-and-casualty insurance. ARAG Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG provides liability, household contents, accident, pet health, buildings and business insurance, among other products. Its sports-insurance activities cover a very large base of amateur and professional athletes. ARAG Krankenversicherungs-AG is based in Munich and serves the German private-health market. Ownership has remained concentrated in the Fassbender family. Paul-Otto Fassbender, the founder's grandson, became Chairman of the Management Board in 2000 and held that role until 2020. He then became Chairman of the Supervisory Board and remains the group's principal owner. Renko Dirksen became Speaker of the Board of Management in 2020 and was appointed Chairman in 2025. By the end of 2024, ARAG reported more than 6,100 employees, 13.8 million policies and €2.843 billion in gross premium income, with most policies held outside Germany. The group continues to present legal protection as its core international competence while maintaining complementary health and property-and-casualty businesses.
