Overview
Apo.com Group GmbH is a privately held German health company operating online-pharmacy, pharmaceutical fulfilment and digital-health activities across several European markets. Its headquarters are in Markkleeberg near Leipzig, with additional locations in Duiven in the Netherlands and Wrocław in Poland. The group is best known in Germany through the apodiscounter.de online pharmacy and the apo.com health platform, while related brands and subsidiaries include Deutsche Internet Apotheke, Juvalis and Apolux. The business developed from a retail pharmacy founded by pharmacist Kirsten Fritsch in Leipzig in the early 1990s. That pharmacy opened in 1995 in the Paunsdorf Center and was associated with an early Kaufland pharmacy initiative. In 2004, the Fritsch family registered Apo-Discounter.de as an online pharmacy. Initial dispatches were handled from the back office of the Leipzig pharmacy, but rapid growth soon required dedicated logistics capacity. Industrial engineer Dirk Wappler joined in 2005, and the operation subsequently moved to Markkleeberg after reaching a reported capacity of about 1,000 parcels per day. Michael Fritsch and Dirk Wappler established Apologistics GmbH in 2007. Investment from GE Capital's leasing division supported the development of a roughly 2,800-square-metre logistics centre in Markkleeberg. The company then expanded its commercial reach through relationships with online marketplaces and retailers, including Amazon, eBay and Lidl. By 2010, the online pharmacy business had surpassed one million customers. Further capital was supplied in 2013 by banker and shareholder Gerhard Köhler. In 2018, THI Investments, the investment vehicle associated with the Hagenmeyer family, invested in the group and later became its majority owner. The investment enabled the construction of a substantially larger logistics centre in Duiven, Netherlands. Opened in 2020, the approximately 20,000-square-metre facility uses highly automated warehouse processes, including robot-supported picking. The mail-order pharmacy business was transferred to affiliated Apo Pharmacy B.V., which operates online-pharmacy activities for the group. In 2021, Apologistics GmbH adopted the Apo.com Group name. The rebranding accompanied a strategic shift from a primarily logistics-led online-pharmacy identity toward a broader health-tech positioning. Under CEO Dr. Oliver Scheel, the group has described its focus as combining digital services, pharmaceutical distribution and pharmacy fulfilment. Areas associated with this direction include digital advice tools, telemedicine cooperation and pharmaceutical services connected with electronic prescribing and online consultations. The group operates beyond Germany through domains and business activities in markets including Poland and Austria. In 2024 it began a cooperation with Fressnapf involving prescription veterinary medicines, extending its fulfilment proposition into animal healthcare. Apo.com Group also participates in industry representation through membership of the European Association of E-Pharmacies since March 2024; it was previously associated with the German Federal Association of Mail-Order Pharmacies. Its two automated logistics centres in Markkleeberg and Duiven are described as capable of handling up to 54,000 parcels per day. The company is therefore positioned as a major German online-pharmacy operator and as a European digital-health and pharmaceutical-commerce platform rather than as a conventional pharmaceutical manufacturer.
History
Apo.com Group traces its origins to a Leipzig pharmacy founded by pharmacist Kirsten Fritsch in the early 1990s. The pharmacy opened in 1995 at the Paunsdorf Center and was part of an early Kaufland pharmacy initiative. In 2004, the Fritsch family created the Apo-Discounter.de online-pharmacy business. Orders were initially packed and dispatched from the physical pharmacy's back-office area. Growth quickly outstripped the original premises. Dirk Wappler, an industrial engineer, joined the business in 2005, and the online operation moved to Markkleeberg near Leipzig after reaching approximately 1,000 parcels per day. In 2007, pharmacist Michael Fritsch and Wappler founded Apologistics GmbH. Financing from GE Capital's leasing division helped establish a 2,800-square-metre logistics centre in Markkleeberg. The company expanded its reach through commercial arrangements with Amazon, eBay and Lidl. It reported passing one million customers in 2010. In 2013, banker and shareholder Gerhard Köhler invested in Apologistics. A more significant ownership and infrastructure development phase began in 2018, when THI Investments, linked to the Hagenmeyer family, invested in the company and later became its majority owner. This investment supported a new logistics facility in Duiven in the Netherlands. Opened in 2020, the facility covers approximately 20,000 square metres and uses a high degree of automation, including robot-assisted order picking. The mail-order pharmacy operation was placed in the affiliated Apo Pharmacy B.V., which continues to operate the online-pharmacy businesses. The corporate identity changed in 2021, when Apologistics became Apo.com Group. The new name reflected an intended evolution from a logistics-oriented online pharmacy toward a broader health-tech business. Dr. Oliver Scheel became CEO, and the group's stated areas of development included digital advice tools, telemedicine links and pharmaceutical services associated with online consultations and electronic prescriptions. The group subsequently maintained a presence in several European markets, including Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Austria. Its portfolio includes apodiscounter.de, apo.com, Deutsche Internet Apotheke, Juvalis and Apolux. In 2024, a cooperation with Fressnapf added prescription veterinary medicines to the company's fulfilment activities. Apo.com Group also joined the European Association of E-Pharmacies in March 2024, after earlier involvement with the Federal Association of German Mail-Order Pharmacies. With automated logistics sites in Markkleeberg and Duiven, the group describes its network as capable of shipping up to 54,000 parcels per day. The company's historical development reflects the wider European shift from mail-order pharmacy toward integrated digital healthcare, combining regulated medicine distribution, automated fulfilment and digital customer services.
