American InterContinental University (AIU) is a private, for-profit university headquartered in Chandler, Arizona. It operates as part of the American InterContinental University System, whose parent company is Perdoceo Education Corporation, formerly Career Education Corporation. Perdoceo is a publicly traded education company listed on Nasdaq under the symbol PRDO. The university's institutional accreditation is provided by the Higher Learning Commission. The institution began in 1970 in Lucerne, Switzerland, where Jack and Helen Barnette founded it as the American Fashion College of Switzerland. Its original emphasis was fashion education, but the school broadened its curriculum into commercial art, interior design, business, and other applied disciplines. American InterContinental University was established in 1970 in Lucerne, Switzerland, by Atlanta-based American couple Jack and Helen Barnette. Initially called the American Fashion College of Switzerland, it was organized around applied fashion education and received recognition as an American degree-awarding institution in 1971. Associate and bachelor's degree instruction began in 1974. The institution expanded beyond fashion during the 1970s. In 1976 it opened an Atlanta campus known as the American College for the Applied Arts. Two years later, its Lucerne operation moved to London and became the American College in London. By that time, the school had about 300 students and had added commercial art, interior design, and business to its curriculum.
