Overview
Altia was a Finnish alcoholic-beverage company active in production, importing, exporting, brand management and distribution. Based in Helsinki, it developed from the production and import businesses separated from Finland's former alcohol-monopoly structure. The company was state-owned for much of its existence and operated alongside, but separately from, Alko after the restructuring of Finland's alcohol sector left Alko with the distribution monopoly. Altia combined proprietary brands with a service-platform model for third-party drinks companies. Its own portfolio included spirits, vodka, aquavit, cognac, liqueurs, glögg and wines. Koskenkorva and Jaloviina were among its best-known Finnish brands, while Explorer Vodka, Grönstedt's Cognac, Blossa Glögg and Chill Out wines were prominent in other Nordic markets. The company also held or managed regional heritage brands such as O. P. Anderson, Skåne Akvavit, Brøndums Snaps, Larsen Cognac, Renault Cognac and Saaremaa Vodka. In addition, it imported and distributed international brands, including Drostdy-Hof, Two Oceans and Jack Daniel's, and produced Finlandia Vodka for its owner Brown-Forman. Its operating footprint covered Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Estonia and Latvia. Production facilities were located in Koskenkorva and Rajamäki in Finland and Tabasalu in Estonia. Sales and distribution companies served both Nordic alcohol-monopoly markets and the more open markets of Denmark, Estonia and Latvia. This gave Altia a dual identity: a producer and owner of regional drinks brands, and a route-to-market partner for international beverage companies. Altia expanded through acquisitions, including Scandinavian Beverage Group in 2004 and a 2010 portfolio transaction involving wine brands, Swedish and Danish heritage spirits, bottling capacity and logistics facilities. The company became publicly tradeable on Nasdaq Helsinki in 2018. In 2020 it proposed combining with Norwegian alcohol wholesaler Arcus. Following regulatory approvals, the merger was completed on 1 September 2021, creating Anora Group. Altia ceased to exist as a separate listed company, while many of its brands, production activities and market operations continued within Anora.
History
Altia's origins lay in the reorganization of Finland's state-linked alcohol industry. The company was formed in 1999 from production and import activities that had previously been associated with the old Alko alcohol-monopoly structure. After the reorganization, Altia operated as a separate producer, importer, exporter and marketer, while Alko retained the distribution monopoly in Finland. The company built a business model around two complementary activities. First, it developed and managed its own portfolio of Nordic and Baltic alcoholic-beverage brands. Second, it offered a regional commercial and distribution platform to partners seeking access to the Nordic and Baltic markets. This structure allowed Altia to combine manufacturing and brand development with importing, sales representation, logistics and market execution. Altia's production network included plants in Koskenkorva and Rajamäki in Finland and Tabasalu in Estonia. Its market presence extended across Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Estonia and Latvia. The company used different operating structures in markets with alcohol monopolies and those with more open wholesale systems. In Finland, Sweden and Norway it operated through sales companies and partner-oriented distribution businesses; in Denmark, Estonia and Latvia it operated in comparatively open markets through local entities. Expansion came through both acquisitions and portfolio development. In 2004 Altia acquired Scandinavian Beverage Group. In 2010 it acquired a group of wine brands, including Chill Out and Blossa Glögg, together with Swedish and Danish heritage spirits. The transaction also brought the Svendborg bottling facility in Denmark and logistics centres in Odense and Årsta. The enlarged portfolio included brands such as O. P. Anderson, Skåne Akvavit, Svenska Nubbar, 1-Enkelt Bitter, Brøndums Snaps, Larsen Cognac, Explorer Vodka, Kronvodka, Lord Calvert Canadian Whisky and Barracuda Rum. Koskenkorva and Jaloviina were particularly associated with Altia's Finnish operations. Other brands were prominent in individual national markets, including Explorer Vodka, Grönstedt's Cognac, Blossa Glögg and Chill Out in Sweden, 1 Enkelt in Denmark, Saaremaa Vodka in Estonia and Renault Cognac in travel retail. Altia also produced Finlandia Vodka, a brand wholly owned by Brown-Forman. The Finlandia arrangement reflected the wider reduction of Finnish state ownership in commercial alcohol assets. Altia became publicly tradeable on Nasdaq Helsinki in 2018. Its later strategic direction was shaped by consolidation in the Nordic drinks sector. In 2020, the company announced a proposed merger with Arcus, a Norwegian alcohol wholesaler. The transaction required competition approvals in Finland, Norway and Sweden. It was completed on 1 September 2021, creating Anora Group. Altia consequently disappeared as a separate listed company, while its brands, production assets, distribution capabilities and regional market businesses were incorporated into the new group.

Koskenkorva is a Finnish spirits brand closely associated with Altia's domestic production base. The portfolio is linked to grain-based vodka and other spirits made in Finland, and the brand became one of the company's most recognizable proprietary offerings. Its identity draws on Finnish origin and local production and it continued within the successor Anora portfolio.
JaloviinaSpirits
Jaloviina was one of Altia's best-known Finnish spirits brands. It formed part of the company's domestic proprietary portfolio alongside Koskenkorva and represented Altia's role in preserving and commercializing established Finnish beverage brands. Chill OutWine2010
Chill Out was a wine brand acquired by Altia in the 2010 portfolio transaction. It formed part of the company's consumer-facing wine business, complementing its spirits and seasonal beverage brands. Explorer VodkaVodka
Explorer Vodka was a prominent vodka brand in Altia's Swedish portfolio.
