Overview

Adama Agricultural Solutions, commonly branded as ADAMA, is an Israeli global crop-protection company whose business covers the development, manufacture, registration and commercialization of agricultural chemical products. Its principal portfolio consists of herbicides, insecticides and fungicides, supplemented by seed-treatment products, differentiated formulations and related technologies intended to improve the effectiveness, stability, handling or logistics of crop-protection products. The company serves growers, agricultural distributors and other participants in the farm-input supply chain across Europe, Asia, North America, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Australia. The company’s origins lie in two Israeli agrochemical businesses. Agan was established in 1945, while Makhteshim Chemical Works was founded in 1952 in Israel’s Negev region. After operating separately for decades, the businesses merged in 1998 to create Makhteshim Agan Industries. The combined company expanded internationally through manufacturing, product development, registrations and acquisitions, becoming a major producer of off-patent crop-protection products. Its competitive model has historically emphasized broad product coverage, formulation expertise, manufacturing scale, regulatory capabilities and distribution in agricultural markets where products must be approved and labeled separately. China National Chemical Corporation, generally known as ChemChina, acquired a controlling interest in Makhteshim Agan in 2011 and completed the purchase of the remaining shares in 2016. In 2014, the company adopted the ADAMA Agricultural Solutions name as part of a unified international branding program. In 2017, ADAMA merged with Hubei Sanonda Co., Ltd., creating a combined crop-protection company with expanded Chinese manufacturing and a listing on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. The listed entity became known as ADAMA Ltd. Following the creation of the Syngenta Group, ADAMA became a distinct business unit within the group in 2020. Syngenta Group is headquartered in Switzerland and is owned by Sinochem Holdings Corporation. ADAMA continues to operate under its own brand and commercial identity while participating in a broader agricultural technology group. Its reported operating footprint includes more than 20 manufacturing sites, synthesis facilities in Israel, China and Brazil, formulation plants in several regions, and research and development centers in Israel, China and India. ADAMA’s products are subject to country-specific regulatory approvals, crop registrations, labeling requirements, residue limits and environmental rules. Consequently, a product name, formulation or registered use available in one market may not be available in another. The company’s portfolio combines established off-patent active ingredients with differentiated formulations and newer active-ingredient programs. In 2024, ADAMA announced development of flumetylsulforim, also known as Gilboa, an active ingredient classified by the Fungicide Resistance Action Committee as having a novel mode of action for cereal use. Products based on that ingredient were expected to enter the United Kingdom in 2027, subject to the relevant approvals, with further European launches anticipated afterward.

History

ADAMA’s corporate history is rooted in Israel’s postwar agricultural-chemicals industry. Agan was founded in 1945, and Makhteshim Chemical Works was established in 1952 in the Negev. Both companies developed expertise in agricultural chemicals and operated independently for many years. Their eventual combination reflected the increasing importance of scale in an industry requiring chemical synthesis, formulation, regulatory registration, manufacturing infrastructure and distribution across multiple national markets. In 1998, Agan and Makhteshim Chemical Works merged to form Makhteshim Agan Industries Ltd. The new group developed into an international crop-protection manufacturer, with particular strength in off-patent products. These products are based on active ingredients whose patent protection has expired or whose commercial opportunity is built around established chemistry. Makhteshim Agan competed through manufacturing efficiency, access to active ingredients, formulation and packaging capabilities, regulatory know-how and the ability to distribute a wide range of products across agricultural regions. During the 2000s, the group expanded its international presence through product development and acquisitions. It built operations serving major agricultural markets and established a business model that combined active-ingredient synthesis with formulation and local registration. Crop-protection products cannot generally be marketed on a single worldwide approval: their permitted crops, application rates, labels, residue limits and environmental conditions depend on the rules of each jurisdiction. This made regulatory and commercial infrastructure central to the company’s growth. In 2011, China National Chemical Corporation acquired a controlling stake in Makhteshim Agan. The transaction brought the Israeli crop-protection group into a large Chinese chemical and industrial portfolio. ChemChina later completed the acquisition of the remaining shares in 2016. Between those transactions, the company introduced the ADAMA identity. In 2014, Makhteshim Agan changed its name to ADAMA Agricultural Solutions, creating a more unified global commercial brand while preserving the underlying crop-protection business. A further structural change occurred in 2017, when ADAMA merged with Hubei Sanonda Co., Ltd. The combination strengthened the company’s manufacturing presence in China and created an integrated China-linked global crop-protection company. The merged entity was listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange as ADAMA Ltd. The listing provided a public-market identity for the combined business, while the ADAMA name continued to be used for its international brand and operating activities. In 2020, ADAMA became a distinct business unit within Syngenta Group. The group is headquartered in Switzerland and is owned by Sinochem Holdings Corporation. ADAMA retained its own brand, products and commercial platform, but gained a closer relationship with the wider group’s agricultural technology, supply, research and distribution resources. ADAMA’s current operating structure includes manufacturing, formulation, research and development, product registration and sales activities across multiple continents. The company reports more than 20 manufacturing sites, including synthesis facilities in Israel, China and Brazil and formulation plants in Israel, China, India, Europe, North America and South America. Research and development centers in Israel, China and India support formulation technologies, product development and regulatory work. The company continues to combine established off-patent crop-protection products with differentiated formulation technologies and newer active-ingredient programs. Asorbital is described as a technology intended to improve active-ingredient uptake in cereal crops, while Sesgama is intended to support higher active-ingredient concentrations in suspension formulations and potentially reduce packaging and transport requirements. In 2024, ADAMA announced development of flumetylsulforim, or Gilboa, for cereal applications. The company indicated that United Kingdom products based on the ingredient were expected in 2027, with additional European markets to follow subject to regulatory approvals. ADAMA also publishes environmental, social and governance information covering areas such as emissions reduction, manufacturing efficiency and responsible product stewardship.
