Overview
Acme United Corporation is a United States-based consumer and industrial-products company whose history began with scissors and shears and later expanded into measuring instruments, office and school supplies, craft tools, industrial cutting products, workplace safety goods, and first-aid equipment. The business was established in 1867 by German immigrant Leo Renz, initially operating as a shear manufacturer in Connecticut. It was incorporated in 1873 and subsequently developed through a succession of name changes, acquisitions, product extensions, and geographic expansion. The company’s portfolio has traditionally been organized around specialist brands rather than a single consumer identity. Westcott is associated with scissors, rulers, paper trimmers, sharpeners, and other school, office, home, and craft products. Clauss serves professional and industrial cutting applications, including shears, utility knives, kitchen and garden tools, and craft implements. The company’s safety and first-aid portfolio has included PhysiciansCare, Pac-Kit, First Aid Only, Med-Nap, Safety Made, and related businesses. DMT supplies diamond-based sharpening products, while Spill Magic focuses on absorbent products designed to help manage spills and reduce slip-and-fall risks. Acme United sells through retail, office-supply, hardware, industrial, school, healthcare, promotional-products, and institutional channels. Customers and distribution partners have included major office-supply chains, mass merchants, home-improvement retailers, pharmacies, industrial distributors, and specialty dealers. Its operations span product development, sourcing, manufacturing, quality control, marketing, sales, and distribution in North America, Europe, and Asia. A major strategic phase began in the 1990s after the company suffered from dependence on a large medical-tools customer. Under Walter C. Johnsen, Acme United reorganized its operations, exited or sold parts of its medical business, closed manufacturing facilities, and concentrated on higher-margin office, school, cutting, and safety categories. During the 2000s and 2010s, it used acquisitions to broaden its product base, purchasing businesses or assets associated with Clauss, Camillus, Pac-Kit, C-Thru, First Aid Only, DMT, Spill Magic, First Aid Central, Med-Nap, and other safety companies. The company launched Cuda fishing tools in 2014, but sold its Camillus and Cuda hunting and fishing lines to GSM Outdoors in 2023. More recent activity has therefore emphasized cutting tools, first aid, workplace safety, absorbents, and related products. Acme United remains a publicly traded company headquartered in Fairfield, Connecticut, with a portfolio-oriented operating model and a customer base extending from consumers and schools to industrial and institutional buyers.
History
Acme United traces its roots to 1867, when Leo Renz acquired a former grist mill in Naugatuck, Connecticut, and began making scissors and cast-iron shears. In 1873, the enterprise was incorporated as the Renz Shear Company. It moved to Bridgeport during the 1880s and became Acme Shear Company. Under the Wheeler family, the business expanded substantially and was described as the world’s largest maker of shears and scissors by 1946. After the Second World War, Acme established a United Kingdom subsidiary to serve Europe directly. In 1965 it introduced disposable medical scissors and surgical instruments, and demand led to a manufacturing facility in Fremont, North Carolina. The company completed an initial public offering in 1967, its centennial year. During the 1970s, Acme acquired Westcott Rule Company, a maker of rulers founded in 1872. The broader product range prompted the name Acme United Corporation. The company also expanded its medical activities and acquired a Canadian ruler business, which ultimately became Acme United Limited. The 1980s brought significant difficulty. Acme had become heavily dependent on American Hospital Supply, and lost more than $20 million in annual sales when that customer began producing products internally. Acme responded with acquisitions and international restructuring, though not all initiatives succeeded. Losses continued into the early 1990s, placing pressure on management and the share price. Walter C. Johnsen joined the board in 1995 and became chief executive later that year. His management team sold the medical business to Medical Action Industries, closed seven manufacturing plants, and shifted attention toward higher-margin student scissors, rulers, staplers, and office products. The company returned to profitability in 2000 and broadened distribution through mass merchants. The next phase centered on focused acquisitions. Acme bought Clauss Cutlery in 2004, acquired Camillus brand names and intellectual property through a 2007 bankruptcy auction, and purchased Pac-Kit in 2011. It acquired C-Thru assets in 2012 and integrated many of those products into Westcott. In 2013 it consolidated distribution in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. First Aid Only joined the company in 2014, strengthening workplace first aid, while the Cuda fishing-tool line was launched the same year. Acme acquired DMT in 2016, Spill Magic in 2017, First Aid Central in 2020, and Med-Nap’s assets later in 2020. In 2022 it acquired Safety Made and Ready 4 Kits, both connected with customized or promotional first-aid products. In 2023 it acquired Hawktree Solutions in Canada and sold the Camillus and Cuda hunting and fishing lines to GSM Holdings. The resulting portfolio is concentrated in cutting and measuring products, first aid, workplace safety, sharpening, and spill-control categories.
