Overview
Academy Sports + Outdoors is an American sporting-goods and outdoor-products retailer headquartered at the Katy Distribution Center in western Harris County, Texas. The company operates large-format stores and an e-commerce channel offering merchandise for team sports, fitness, outdoor recreation, hunting, fishing, camping, boating, patio use, and everyday active lifestyles. Its assortment combines national brands with private-label products and is positioned around broad selection, accessible pricing, and convenient regional store coverage. The business began in 1938, when Max Gochman opened the Academy Tire Shop in San Antonio, Texas, across from St. Henry's Academy. The store later added military-surplus merchandise, and the Academy name was subsequently used for additional locations in the Austin area. In 1970, Max Gochman's son Arthur acquired six military-surplus stores in Houston. He bought out his partner in 1973 and changed the business name from Southern Sales to Academy Corp. Arthur later left legal practice and took active control of the company, reshaping its merchandising and operating model. Academy grew from a Texas-centered military-surplus and general-merchandise retailer into a broader sporting-goods chain during the 1980s and 1990s. It expanded its warehouse and office infrastructure, increased its store count, and developed a reputation in Texas for products such as fishing licenses and cowboy boots. The company opened its first store outside Texas in Edmond, Oklahoma, in 1994, followed by Louisiana later that year. It subsequently entered Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kansas, Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois. The chain continued to increase its physical scale during the 2000s, opening its fiftieth store in 2000, a substantially larger-format store in 2006, and additional distribution capacity in Georgia and Tennessee. It was acquired by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts in May 2011 after approximately seven decades of private family ownership. Later in 2011, Academy launched an e-commerce store, moving from a primarily store-based model toward multichannel retail. Academy completed an initial public offering in October 2020 and began trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the symbol ASO. Following the IPO, management articulated a plan for continued store growth, including a target of approximately eight to ten new stores per year beginning in 2022. The retailer continued entering new states, including Virginia and West Virginia in 2022, Ohio in 2024, and Maryland and Pennsylvania in 2025. Its expansion has remained primarily domestic, with the southern United States continuing to serve as its historical and operational base. The brand also uses sponsorships and commercial partnerships to reinforce its connection with sports and outdoor consumers. It holds naming rights for the Bassmaster Classic and has been identified as an official sporting retailer for several collegiate athletic conferences. Partnerships with professional sports organizations, including the Houston Astros and Indianapolis Colts, further connect the retailer with local and regional sports audiences. Academy's current identity is therefore built on a combination of regional retail heritage, large-format stores, digital commerce, private-label merchandise, national-brand distribution, and continued expansion across the United States.
History
Academy Sports + Outdoors originated in 1938, when Max Gochman opened the Academy Tire Shop in San Antonio, Texas. The shop later added military-surplus merchandise. The Academy name was then used for new stores in the Austin area, establishing the foundation of the business's later identity. In 1970, Arthur Gochman, Max's son, acquired six military-surplus stores in Houston. He bought out his partner in 1973 and changed the company name from Southern Sales to Academy Corp. After leaving his legal practice in 1978, Arthur moved to Houston and assumed direct control. He reorganized the company's merchandising policies and invested in infrastructure, including new offices and a 50,000-square-foot warehouse opened in 1981. The store count rose from eight in 1980 to twelve in 1985 and eighteen by 1990. By the late 1980s and early 1990s, Academy had become a significant Texas chain. Its merchandise expanded beyond military surplus into sporting goods, outdoor products, footwear, apparel, and related recreational categories. The chain was particularly prominent in fishing-related retail and cowboy boots. It reached thirty-four stores by 1995 after beginning interstate expansion. Its first store outside Texas opened in Edmond, Oklahoma, in June 1994, followed by a Lafayette, Louisiana, location in November of that year. David Gochman joined the business full time in 1995 after initially working in store operations and as general counsel. He became chairman, president, and chief executive officer in 1996 or 1997, as responsibility for the family business passed to the next generation. Academy entered Alabama in 1996, Florida in 1998, and Mississippi and Tennessee in 1999. It opened its fiftieth store in Temple, Texas, in 2000, expanded into Arkansas in 2003, and entered Missouri and Georgia in 2005. The company continued to develop larger stores and distribution facilities. In 2006 it opened its first 100,000-square-foot store. Rodney Faldyn became president in 2007, the year Academy expanded into South Carolina. A second distribution warehouse opened in Twiggs County, Georgia, in 2009. During the following years Academy entered North Carolina and Kansas in 2012, Indiana and Kentucky in 2014, and Illinois in 2016. It opened a third distribution warehouse in Cookeville, Tennessee, in 2016. The chain reached 200 stores with an opening in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 2015 and 250 stores with an opening in Mansfield, Texas, in 2018. In May 2011, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts acquired Academy after roughly seventy-four years of private ownership by the Gochman family. The acquisition was followed by the launch of an online store, transforming Academy into a multichannel retailer. Academy subsequently pursued a more formalized expansion strategy combining new stores, digital commerce, and regional distribution capabilities. In October 2020, Academy completed its initial public offering and listed its shares on Nasdaq under the symbol ASO. After becoming public, the company described a plan to add approximately eight to ten stores annually beginning in 2022. The retailer was included on the Fortune 500 list in 2021. Its geographic growth continued with first stores in Virginia and West Virginia in 2022, Ohio in 2024, and Maryland and Pennsylvania in 2025. The company has also used sponsorships and naming-rights arrangements, including the Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic, to strengthen its association with sports and outdoor recreation. Academy's development thus reflects a transition from a family-owned Texas military-surplus retailer into a publicly traded, multistate sporting-goods and outdoor-products chain.
