Yangwang U9 is a high-performance battery electric supercar under BYD's luxury sub-brand Yangwang, designed to compete in the global premium electric supercar market with cutting-edge powertrain and chassis technology.

Key moments

  • April 2023Unveiled as a concept vehicle at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition
  • February 2024Officially launched in the Chinese domestic market
  • August 2025Track Edition of U9 set a new global electric vehicle top-speed record of 472.41 km/h at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg

Yangwang U9 targets the high-end electric supercar segment, facing competition from both international and domestic players:

  • Direct rivals include the Porsche Taycan Turbo S, Tesla Roadster (second generation), and Lamborghini Revuelto plug-in hybrid
  • Domestic Chinese competitors include the昊铂 SSR (Hyper SSR) and other limited-production electric supercars
  • Its quad-motor AWD system and 1306hp output put it on par with top-tier European supercars, while leveraging BYD's mature EV supply chain advantages
  • Competes with global premium electric supercar brands
  • Features industry-leading quad-motor powertrain with extreme performance metrics
  • Benefits from BYD's advanced EV technology and supply chain ecosystem

Yangwang U9 is the flagship halo supercar of BYD’s luxury electric vehicle sub-brand Yangwang, engineered to disrupt the global high-performance premium supercar segment long dominated by legacy European luxury automakers. As BYD’s strategic entry into the ultra-premium EV space, the U9 leverages the parent group’s established vertical integration in electric vehicle components—from advanced blade batteries to high-output quad-motor powertrains—to deliver performance metrics matching or exceeding top-tier incumbent models, while building foundational brand recognition for Yangwang as a competitive Chinese player in the ultra-premium automotive category.

Unlike niche limited-volume boutique supercars, Yangwang U9 benefits from BYD’s massive production scale and mature supply chain efficiencies, allowing it to offer class-comparable performance at a more accessible price point than most of its European rivals. This advantage has helped it gain early traction in China’s domestic luxury car market, while serving as a technology showcase for the entire BYD group, elevating the overall brand perception of BYD’s broader electric vehicle lineup beyond its core mass-market segments.

Brand leadership

Score: 72/100

As the flagship technology demonstration model of Yangwang, the U9 holds clear product leadership in the Chinese electric supercar segment, outperforming most domestic rivals in power output and technical specification, and competes directly with established international supercar brands on core performance metrics. Its positioning as a showcase for BYD’s cutting-edge EV technology also gives it strong thought leadership in the high-performance electric vehicle space.

Customer interaction

Score: 65/100

Yangwang U9 has engaged target customers through major international automotive exhibitions, exclusive track experience events, and targeted digital social media campaigns, generating significant online discussion among China’s automotive enthusiast community. However, as a low-volume ultra-premium model, it has limited direct customer touchpoints compared to mass-market vehicles, with most interactions limited to high-net-worth prospects and industry observers.

Brand momentum

Score: 85/100

Launched recently as part of BYD’s global premium expansion push, Yangwang U9 has generated strong industry and consumer interest since its debut, riding the wave of BYD’s overall rapid global growth in electric vehicle sales. Sustained media coverage of its industry-disrupting positioning and track performance has kept its brand momentum high, with growing awareness among global premium car buyers.

Brand stability

Score: 78/100

Backed by the financial and operational strength of BYD, one of the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturers, Yangwang U9 benefits from a stable supply chain and ongoing product development support, eliminating the production and supply volatility that often affects low-volume supercar models from smaller manufacturers. Its brand positioning and core value proposition have remained consistent since launch, supporting stable market perception.

Brand heritage

Score: 25/100

Yangwang U9 is a recently launched model, introduced as part of the newly established Yangwang luxury sub-brand, so it has very limited market history compared to legacy supercar nameplates that have built brand heritage over decades. This young age means it has not yet had the opportunity to cultivate long-term brand loyalty or emotional connection among traditional supercar enthusiasts.

Industry influence

Score: 80/100

Yangwang U9 is widely recognized within the global automotive industry as a landmark model that demonstrates China’s capability to produce world-class premium electric supercars, breaking the long-held monopoly of European brands in the ultra-high-performance supercar segment. It has become a key reference point for the global industry’s transition from gasoline-powered supercars to electric high-performance vehicles.

Global market penetration

Score: 45/100

Yangwang U9 is currently sold primarily in its home Chinese domestic market, with formal expansion into European and other global premium automotive markets still in the early planning stages. It has not yet achieved widespread distribution or significant consumer brand recognition outside of China, so its global footprint remains nascent.

The Yangwang U9 is a battery electric super-coupe manufactured by BYD Auto under its luxury car brand Yangwang. The U9 is the second vehicle from the Yangwang brand after the U8 off-road SUV, and was formally introduced on Auto Shanghai in April 2023. As of April 2026, its "Xtreme" variant was the fastest production car in the world, with a top speed of 496 km/h, then overridden by the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut.

Overview

The U9 was developed by German car designer Wolfgang Egger, who previously served as a head designer for Alfa Romeo, Audi and Lamborghini, and began working for BYD in 2017.[2]

The U9 was first introduced on 6 April 2023, and went on sale in February 2024.[1] Mass production officially started on 16 August 2024.[3]

The U9 achieved an uncertified Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time of 7 minutes and 17.9 seconds in November 2024. It also achieved a straight-line top speed of 391.94 km/h, making it the fastest Chinese car in serial production.[4]

Specifications

The U9 is equipped with four 240 kW electric motors providing a total power output of 960 kW and a maximum range of 450 km on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). BYD reported a 0–100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of 2.36 seconds, and a 1/4 mi drag race time of 9.78 seconds.

The U9 is built with an 800V electrical architecture, with a maximum DC charging power of 500 kW. The charging duration between 30% and 80% is 10 minutes. The U9 also supports dual charging, or plugging in two chargers simultaneously to increase charging speed.

Like the U8, the U9 features BYD's proprietary "e4" (易四方) individual wheel drive system, which enables the vehicle to redistribute torque among the four wheels in case of traction loss or a tyre puncture at speed; and the "DiSus" (云辇) active suspension system, which allows the wheels' ground clearance to be readjusted individually and even to perform a brief vertical jump.[5] The active suspension consists of three different systems; DiSus-C controls variable damping, DiSus-A controls the air suspension, and DiSus-P controls the hydraulic system.[6] Regarding the vertical jump, the U9 will shrink first, then bounce up, launching all four wheels off the ground at the same time.[5] BYD has not announced the specific reason for the jump function on the U9, but the function demonstrates the "DiSus-X" body control system.

It was launched in 2024 with a price of 1.68 million Yuan (USD 236,000; EUR 215,000).[7]

In August 2025, specifications of the U9 Track Edition were released by the MIIT. It retains the individual wheel drive system, but changes the motors to the TZ240XYA model which output to 555 kW each for a total of 2220 kW, making it the most powerful production car ever built.[8] It is equipped with smaller 20-inch wheels with the front tire width increasing from 275 mm to 325 mm to match the rears.[9] In August 2025, an engineering test sample of U9 Track Edition broke the record for the fastest top speed of an electric car, which reached 472.41 km/h.[10]

Records

On September 14, 2025, BYD officially unveiled the Yangwang U9 Xtreme, a track-focused version of the U9. It is currently the most powerful production model of the U9. It achieved a maximum speed of 496.22 km/h (308.33 mph) at Germany’s ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg, making it the former fastest road legal car in the world. It was driven by German track specialist Marc Basseng. Yangwang also announced a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time of 6 minutes 59.157 seconds. Production will be limited to 30 units for global markets.[11][12][13][14]

Media

The U9 Extreme is set to appear in Gran Turismo 7 as a playable vehicle as part of a future update.[15]
