"oneLiner": "Austrian video game publisher known for Gothic, SpellForce, Giants and strategy-game titles.",
"summary": "JoWooD Entertainment was an Austrian video game publisher whose business developed from a small domestic operation into a broader European publishing and distribution group before collapsing into insolvency in 2011. The company was founded in 1995 in Ebensee by Dieter Bernauer, Johann Reitinger, Johann Schilcher and Andreas Tobler. Its headquarters were later moved to Liezen. Originally established as JoWooD Productions Software AG, the company operated across publishing, development, distribution and licensing, and became associated with a varied catalogue of PC and console-oriented games.\n\nThe publisher’s best-known properties included the Gothic action-role-playing series, the SpellForce strategy and role-playing series, the Industry Giant games and the Giants series. Its catalogue also included Beam Breakers, Transport Giant, World War III: Black Gold, The Sting! and Hotel Giant. This portfolio placed JoWooD between the traditional PC publisher and the European mid-market distributor: it handled original productions and licensed properties while also using territorial distribution agreements to expand the reach of its releases.\n\nJoWooD pursued rapid expansion around the turn of the millennium. In 2000 it became a publicly traded company on the prime market segment of the Vienna Stock Exchange. It also invested in Media Publishing GmbH & Co KG and acquired the development studio Wings Simulations. Later that year it acquired German developer NEON Software and Massive Development. In 2001, the company bought a majority stake in Dynamic Systems, a distributor founded by co-founder Andreas Tobler, and formed a distribution alliance with Infogrames. The arrangement gave Infogrames distribution rights for JoWooD products in Germany, France and the Benelux countries, while JoWooD and Dynamic handled Infogrames products in Austria. JoWooD also acquired Leisuresoft from Infogrames and obtained rights to distribute Disney Interactive PC titles in German-speaking territories.\n\nThe expansion created a substantial operating footprint but also increased financial pressure. JoWooD suffered heavy losses in the early 2000s and came close to insolvency in 2002. It responded by acquiring Ravensburger Interactive Media and its Fishtank Interactive publishing label, a move intended to expand its publishing scale and give the company stronger access to family-oriented software. The company subsequently began reducing its direct involvement in distribution and development. Dynamic Systems was sold to Koch Media in 2003, and JoWooD entered additional territorial arrangements with Koch, Encore Software, Nobilis, Eidos Interactive and Pinnacle Software.\n\nIn 2005 JoWooD exited game development and closed its remaining internal studios, including JoWooD Ebensee, Wings Simulations and Massive Development. The publisher increasingly relied on external developers, licensing and third-party distribution. In 2006 it announced the acquisition of DreamCatcher Games, supporting an effort to enter the North American market. The JoWooD Group later established GS-Line, a budget and casual-games label, and maintained several subsidiaries and operating units, including DreamCatcher Interactive, JoWooD Distribution Services, JoWooD Deutschland, JoWooD Iberica and Quantic Lab.\n\nThe company adopted the name JoWooD Entertainment AG in 2009 and announced an agreement with Valve to make future titles available through Steam. It continued to pursue international publishing arrangements, including a 2010 agreement with HMH covering the global distribution and publishing of Playmobil Interactive products outside Germany, with DreamCatcher handling the United States. These initiatives could not resolve JoWooD’s underlying financial problems. On 7 January 2011, the company filed for bankruptcy and sought a capital-reorganization procedure. On 21 April it reported that negotiations with potential investors had failed and that it had withdrawn its recapitalization applicatio…",

"history": "JoWooD was founded in 1995 in Ebensee, Austria, by Dieter Bernauer, Johann Reitinger, Johann Schilcher and Andreas Tobler. The company later moved its headquarters to Liezen and developed into a publisher of computer games and an operator of distribution businesses. Its catalogue combined internally developed and externally developed titles, particularly in role-playing, strategy, simulation, management and family entertainment.\n\nThe company accelerated its expansion in 2000. It became publicly traded in the prime market segment of the Vienna Stock Exchange, invested in Media Publishing GmbH & Co KG and acquired Wings Simulations. It also acquired the German studios NEON Software and Massive Development. In 2001, JoWooD acquired 70 percent of Dynamic Systems, a distributor founded by co-founder Andreas Tobler. JoWooD and Dynamic then entered a three-year strategic distribution alliance with Infogrames covering Germany, France, Benelux and Austria. JoWooD also acquired Leisuresoft from Infogrames and agreed to distribute Disney Interactive PC titles in German-speaking markets.\n\nJoWooD experienced serious financial losses in early 2002 and came close to insolvency. In May that year it acquired Ravensburger Interactive Media and its Fishtank Interactive publishing label from Ravensburger AG. The deal enlarged the catalogue and was expected to help JoWooD enter the family-oriented market. The company subsequently began moving away from direct distribution. It sold Dynamic Systems to Koch Media in 2003 and entered a North American distribution arrangement with Encore Software. In 2004, its Koch Media relationship was expanded to cover additional European territories and co-publication.\n\nIn 2005 JoWooD left the development business and closed all of its internal studios. JoWooD Ebensee and Wings Simulations closed in January, while Massive Development closed in May. The publisher continued to license, commission and distribute games through external partners. It also became involved in a dispute with developer Perception over the termination of a development agreement for Stargate SG-1: The Alliance and the ownership of the associated license.\n\nJoWooD announced the acquisition of DreamCatcher Games in November 2006 to improve its access to North America. Further distribution deals followed, including arrangements involving Eidos Interactive, Pinnacle Software and Nobilis. In 2007 the JoWooD Group created GS-Line, a budget casual-games label. By the late 2000s, the group included DreamCatcher Interactive, JoWooD Distribution Services, JoWooD Deutschland, JoWooD Iberica and Quantic Lab. In 2009 the parent company changed its name from JoWooD Productions Software AG to JoWooD Entertainment AG and announced a deal with Valve to distribute future titles through Steam.\n\nIn 2010 JoWooD agreed with HMH to publish and distribute Playmobil Interactive products internationally, excluding Germany, with DreamCatcher handling the United States. The expansion did not prevent a financial collapse. JoWooD filed for bankruptcy on 7 January 2011 and sought capital reorganization. On 21 April it announced that negotiations with prospective investors had failed and that it had withdrawn its recapitalization application. Nordic Games acquired JoWooD, its assets and Quantic Lab in June 2011, and later announced the acquisition of JoWooD’s products, brands and selected labels, including The Adventure Company. JoWooD stopped operating independently, while parts of its catalogue and brand portfolio continued under Nordic Games.",
