"summary": "Filmtheater Kriterion is a cinema and student association located at Roetersstraat 170 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Its official name is Vereniging Onderlinge Studentensteun Kriterion (V.O.S.S. Kriterion). Run by students, its origins trace back to the student resistance during World War II. An Amsterdam student group centered on Wouter van Zeytveld and Piet Meerburg helped place Jewish children in hiding; together with other resistance organizations, they rescued about a thousand Jewish children from the nursery opposite the Hollandsche Schouwburg. Many in the group were students whose studies were interrupted by the war, and before the war ended, the 25-year-old Meerburg conceived the plan for a cinema where students could work and thus afford their studies without depending on their parents or the government.\n\nOn 1 June 1945, the Stichting Onderlinge Studenten Steun Kriterion (S.O.S.S. Kriterion) was founded with the goal of \"enabling students at Amsterdam's universities to earn their own study costs.\" The building of the Jewish workers' association Handwerkers Vriendenkring had been confiscated by the NSB during the war; it was later bought with raised funds and converted into a cinema. The name was chosen through a competition, and the Greek word \"Kriterion\" was selected, intended to mean a standard or touchstone. Kriterion adopted a non-hierarchical structure: everyone holds the same position, with no managers; this direct-democratic organization aims to ensure a pleasant working atmosphere and leave room for creativity. On 6 November 1945, Kriterion opened with a festive screening for 200 invited guests, and it was an immediate success, attracting enormous media attention. In 1950, De Telegraaf wrote: \"Het geld om levensonderhoud en studie te betalen ligt maar niet voor het opscheppen. Zij weten het: waar een wil is, is een weg, en die weg leggen zij af, zwaar of niet.\"\n\nThe foundation later launched other work projects, including a petrol station, a childcare center, and a student employment agency. Kriterion also played an important role in Amsterdam's student world; the Amsterdam Student Union (ASVA), also founded by resistance students, was housed in the Roetersstraat building until 1966. In the 1960s, a rift grew between the foundation board and the students working at the cinema, who demanded more say in policy. In 1982, the foundation decided to close Filmtheater Kriterion on the grounds that the new student grant system would make working while studying unnecessary, sparking conflict. The staff at the time occupied the Roetersstraat building, organized as an association, and declared independence. After difficult negotiations, the foundation yielded within weeks, and the students were allowed to run the cinema independently. Since 16 September 1982, the cinema has officially been the Vereniging Onderlinge Studentensteun Kriterion (V.O.S.S. Kriterion), and in 2007 it celebrated its 25th anniversary.\n\nBesides the cinema, the foundation created other projects to help students find work. In 1949, the Kriterion childcare center (Oppascentrale Kriterion) was founded. In 1960, a petrol station opened at Zeeburgerdijk 297 near Flevopark: StudentenPomp Kriterion. In 2002, the station moved to IJburglaan on Zeeburgereiland (near the A10 motorway exit s114). From 1960 to 2020 it was a Shell station; since 2020 Shell has been replaced by BP. In 2026 the student petrol station switched to Esso. A second cinema, Studio/K (formerly Kriterion Oosterlicht), was established at Timorplein in Amsterdam. In 2006, Kriterion opened the student-run restaurant SKEK at Zeedijk in Amsterdam.\n\nKriterion participates in the Cineville cooperative. The Roetersstraat cinema has three auditoriums: K1 with 198 seats, K2 on the ground floor (formerly Hypokriterion or Studio K) with 85 seats, and K3 with 67 seats. Kriterion has screened films by all the great Italian directors such as Fellini, Antonioni, and Visconti, as well as nearly all of Ingmar Bergman's films. In the 1960s, Kriterion introduced the New Wave to the Netherlands, screening films such as Jules et Jim (François Truffaut, 1964) and Hiroshima mon amour (Alain Resnais, 1959). After the directors of Italian Neorealism and the French New Wave, the focus shifted to directors such as David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, Jim Jarmusch, and Tom Tykwer. By tradition, each calendar year opens with Citizen Kane (Orson Welles, 1941), and each academic year always begins with Once Upon a Time in the West (Sergio Leone, 1968). In addition to its regular programming, Kriterion regularly hosts film festivals and events. The longest-running festivals (Cinestud and \"Shorts! International Short Film Festival\") are organized by the staff themselves. Kriterion also provides a stage for Unheard Film – The New Soundtrack Festival, Camera Japan, and Balkan Snapshots Film Festival, among others. On \"Open Screen\" nights, emerging and unknown filmmakers have the chance to show their work on the big screen. Each month, Kriterion organizes in-depth programs with partners such as Amnesty International.",

"history": "Filmtheater Kriterion, officially Vereniging Onderlinge Studentensteun Kriterion (V.O.S.S. Kriterion), is a student-run cinema and student association at Roetersstraat 170 in Amsterdam. It emerged from the student resistance during the Second World War. The Amsterdamse Studenten Groep around Wouter van Zeytveld and Piet Meerburg, with the help of paediatrician Hein Fiedeldij Dop, who through police contacts knew of impending razzias on Jews, placed children in hiding addresses outside the city. Together with other resistance groups they saved about a thousand Jewish children from the crèche opposite the Hollandsche Schouwburg on Plantage Middenlaan, where children stayed awaiting transport to Germany. The resistance group consisted largely of students forced by the war to stop their studies. Well before the end of the Second World War, the 25-year-old Meerburg conceived the plan to realise a film theatre after liberation where students could work, so they could still graduate without depending on their parents or the government.\n\nOn 1 June 1945 the Stichting Onderlinge Studenten Steun Kriterion (S.O.S.S. Kriterion) was founded, with the aim \"to enable students at the Amsterdam Universities to earn the costs of their studies themselves.\" The association building of the Jewish workers' association Handwerkers Vriendenkring, confiscated during the war by the NSB, was bought with collected money and converted into a cinema. A competition was held for the name of the film theatre. The Greek 'Kriterion' was chosen. They wanted the theatre to be a standard, a touchstone. Kriterion received a non-hierarchical structure. Everyone had the same appointment; there were no managers. This organisational structure is directly democratic and would ensure a pleasant working atmosphere every day, with room for creativity. On 6 November 1945 Kriterion opened with a gala performance for 200 invited guests. Kriterion was immediately a success and received enormous attention in the press. The Telegraaf wrote in 1950: \"Het geld om levensonderhoud en studie te betalen ligt maar niet voor het opscheppen. Zij weten het: waar een wil is, is een weg, en die weg leggen zij af, zwaar of niet.\" Later the foundation initiated more work projects, such as a petrol station, a babysitting centre and a student employment agency. Kriterion also played an important role in Amsterdam student life. The Algemene Studenten Vereniging Amsterdam (ASVA), also an initiative of students from the resistance, was housed in the building at Roetersstraat until 1966.\n\nIn the 1960s a growing gap emerged between the board of the foundation and the students who worked in the film theatre. They demanded more say in policy. In 1982 a conflict arose when the foundation decided to close Filmtheater Kriterion, arguing that the new system of study financing would make working alongside study unnecessary. The then employees of Kriterion occupied the building at Roetersstraat, organised themselves into an association and declared themselves independent. The foundation, after tough negotiations, yielded after a few weeks. The students were allowed to manage the film theatre independently from then on. The film theatre has been officially the Vereniging Onderlinge Studenten Steun Kriterion (V.O.S.S. Kriterion) since 16 September 1982 and celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2007.\n\nBesides the film theatre, the foundation also created a number of other projects to help students find work. In 1949 the Oppascentrale Kriterion was founded. In 1960 a petrol station was opened at Zeeburgerdijk 297, near the Flevopark: the StudentenPomp Kriterion. In 2002 it moved to IJburglaan on Zeeburgereiland (near exit s114 of the A10). From 1960 to 2020 it was a Shell pump; since 2020 Shell has been replaced by BP. In 2026 the student pump switched to Esso. At Amsterdam's Timorplein came a second cinema: Studio/K (formerly Kriterion Oosterlicht). In 2006 Kriterion opened SKEK, a student-run eatery on Amsterdam's Zeedijk.\n\nKriterion participates in the Cineville partnership. The theatre on Roetersstraat has three halls: K1 with 198 seats, K2 on the first floor (formerly Hypokriterion or Studio K) with 85 seats, and K3 with 67 seats. In Kriterion the films of all the major Italian cineastes such as Fellini, Antonioni and Visconti have been shown, as well as virtually all films by Ingmar Bergman. In the 1960s Kriterion introduced the nouvelle vague in the Netherlands, with titles such as Jules et Jim (François Truffaut, 1964) and Hiroshima Mon Amour (Alain Resnais, 1959). The cineastes of Italian neorealism and the nouvelle vague gave way to directors such as David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, Jim Jarmusch and Tom Tykwer. By tradition each calendar year opens with Citizen Kane (Orson Welles, 1941). The academic year always starts with Once Upon a Time in the West (Sergio Leone, 1968).
