  "oneLiner": "Bad Afro Records is an independent Copenhagen label known for Scandinavian garage rock, punk, psychedelic rock and limited-edition vinyl releases.",
  "summary": "Bad Afro Records is an independent record label founded in Copenhagen in 1996 by Lars Krogh. It emerged from Moshable Magazine, an underground punk and garage-rock publication that documented Scandinavian music and operated from 1986 to 2000. The label was created during a resurgence of Scandinavian rock and initially concentrated on seven-inch vinyl singles by bands from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway and neighboring scenes. Its early identity was summarized by the slogan “Pushing Scandinavian Rock to the Man!”, a deliberately provocative reference to the visual language of early-1970s blaxploitation cinema. The name and logo similarly drew inspiration from films such as Superfly, Foxy Brown and Dolemite.\n\nBad Afro began as a singles club. Subscribers received a sequence of new seven-inch releases, a model influenced by Sub Pop’s successful singles-club format. The original ambition was to issue 50 singles over ten years as a historical snapshot of Scandinavian garage and punk music. The target was not quite reached: after a decade, the label had released 45 seven-inch singles. This catalog nevertheless established Bad Afro as an important specialist outlet for raw, guitar-driven rock and helped preserve a network of regional bands that had first been covered by Moshable.\n\nThe label’s early roster included The Hellacopters, Turbonegro, The Nomads, Gluecifer, Backyard Babies, The Flaming Sideburns, The Royal Beat Conspiracy, The Burnouts, The Chronics, The Defectors, Sweatmaster and other groups associated with garage rock, punk, surf, rock’n’roll and related underground styles. In 1999, Bad Afro expanded from its singles-centered foundation into full-length albums with the first album release by The Flaming Sideburns. During the following years, albums increasingly became the center of the business, although singles and other short-format releases remained central to the label’s identity.\n\nThe period from approximately 2001 to 2004 was a major growth phase. Scandinavian rock was receiving international attention, The Flaming Sideburns toured widely and obtained licensing arrangements in markets including the United States and Australia, and Bad Afro gained broader recognition through Baby Woodrose. Baby Woodrose’s 2003 album Money for Soul produced two notable radio hits, received a Danish Grammy nomination and helped give the label a national breakthrough in Denmark. A collaboration between Baby Woodrose and veteran Danish beat singer Peter Belli also reached the top of Danish national radio charts, while Baby Woodrose performed twice on the main stage at Roskilde Festival.\n\nFrom the early 2000s, Bad Afro gradually broadened its musical profile. Although garage and punk remained important, many new signings incorporated psychedelic rock, acid rock or other experimental elements. The label worked with On Trial, The Setting Son, Dragontears and Serena-Maneesh, while continuing to release multiple Baby Woodrose albums. This shift connected Bad Afro’s original Scandinavian garage-rock audience with a wider psychedelic-rock constituency.\n\nIn 2009, the label revised its geographic remit. After more than a decade focused primarily on Scandinavian artists, it began releasing music by groups from outside the region, including Australia’s The Dolly Rocker Movement and Italy’s The Mojomatics. Subsequent releases and planned projects also involved artists from the United States, including Cosmonauts and Royal Baths. This international expansion did not abandon the label’s specialist identity; it extended its selection criteria beyond geography while retaining an emphasis on independent, analog-oriented rock.\n\nBad Afro is particularly associated with physical releases and collector-oriented vinyl presentation. Its catalog includes seven-inch singles, albums, EPs, split releases, compilations, live records and CD singles. A distinctive pressing convention made many first and later editions identifiable: first pressings generally appear…",

  "encyclopedia": {
    "history": "Bad Afro Records was created in Copenhagen in 1996 by Lars Krogh as an offshoot of Moshable Magazine, a publication devoted to Scandinavian punk, garage rock and related underground music. Its founding coincided with a strong revival of Scandinavian rock’n’roll. The label’s original mission was to issue vinyl by artists from Scandinavia and Finland, especially in garage, punk and surf-oriented styles. Its branding borrowed visual and verbal cues from early-1970s blaxploitation cinema, while its slogan presented the label as an advocate for Scandinavian rock beyond its home region.\n\nThe company first operated as a singles club. Subscribers could receive forthcoming seven-inch records, an approach modeled partly on Sub Pop’s singles club. Bad Afro hoped to release 50 seven-inch singles during its first ten years, but reached 45 in that period. The early singles documented a wide network of bands, including The Hellacopters, The Nomads, Turbonegro, Gluecifer, The Flaming Sideburns, Backyard Babies and several lesser-known acts. The format established the label’s reputation for carefully selected, physical underground releases.\n\nIn 1999, Bad Afro issued The Flaming Sideburns’ first album and gradually shifted toward full-length records. The label remained rooted in garage and punk but also released material from artists working in stranger or more experimental directions. Between roughly 2001 and 2004, the label experienced its most visible period. The Flaming Sideburns toured internationally and were licensed in countries such as the United States and Australia. Baby Woodrose became especially important after Money for Soul appeared in 2003. The album produced two successful radio tracks, earned a Danish Grammy nomination and helped establish Bad Afro nationally. Baby Woodrose’s work with Peter Belli also reached the top of Danish national radio, and the group performed at Roskilde Festival.\n\nThe label’s sound broadened after this success. Psychedelic rock became increasingly prominent, with releases by Baby Woodrose, On Trial, The Setting Son, Dragontears and Serena-Maneesh. The 2003 reissue of Baby Woodrose’s Blows Your Mind also became notable for a dispute over its erotic cover art. Myspace censored the image on multiple occasions, and a German pressing plant reportedly refused to print the LP. The episode was discussed in relation to artistic freedom and the treatment of provocative imagery in music packaging.\n\nIn 2009, Bad Afro abandoned its strictly Scandinavian recruitment policy. The Dolly Rocker Movement from Australia and The Mojomatics from Italy joined the label’s international roster, and later plans included American bands such as Cosmonauts and Royal Baths. Through this change, Bad Afro retained its focus on independent guitar music while treating geography as less important than style and artistic fit.\n\nThe label’s catalog encompasses albums, EPs, split records, compilations, live albums, CD singles and a substantial run of seven-inch singles. Its pressing-color system—black for first pressings, then red, green and purple for later pressings—became a recognizable feature for collectors. Available sources document the label’s historical output and artistic development through the early 2010s, but do not reliably establish its present management, ownership, website or whether it remains active.",
