Kamov is a Russian (originally Soviet) rotorcraft manufacturing company and one of the world's leading designers of coaxial rotor helicopters. Founded by aerospace engineer Nikolai Il'yich Kamov, the company has long specialized in compact helicopters suited for naval service and special operations, with all its designs carrying the "Ka" model prefix. Today it operates as a retained brand under Russian state-owned holding company Russian Helicopters.

Key moments

  • 1929Nikolai Kamov and N.K. Skrzhinskii complete the first Soviet autogyro, the KASKR-I "Red Engineer", establishing the origin of the Kamov enterprise.
  • 1948The Soviet government formally establishes the Kamov Design Bureau (OKB-2) to develop purpose-built helicopters.
  • 1952The Ka-15, Kamov's first mass-produced coaxial rotor helicopter, completes its maiden flight.
  • 2006Kamov merges with Mil and Rostvertol to form Oboronprom Corp.
  • 2008Kamov is fully integrated into Russian Helicopters JSC, retaining its brand name.

Kamov holds a unique and differentiated position in the global rotorcraft market, built on its decades of specialization in coaxial rotor technology. Key competitive observations include:

  • Its signature coaxial rotor design eliminates the need for a tail rotor, resulting in a much more compact airframe that is ideal for shipboard deployment, giving Kamov a long-standing advantage with naval customers worldwide.
  • Historically, Kamov had a largely complementary market position with fellow Russian helicopter manufacturer Mil: Mil focused on large, land-based conventional rotor helicopters, while Kamov dominated the regional market for compact naval and special operations helicopters.
  • After consolidation into Russian Helicopters, Kamov continues to leverage its strong brand recognition in coaxial rotor technology. Its popular models (such as the Ka-32 utility helicopter and Ka-27 anti-submarine helicopter) are exported to dozens of countries, and it maintains the leading global market share for coaxial rotorcraft.

JSC Kamov is a rotorcraft manufacturing company based in Lyubertsy, Russia.

The Kamov Design Bureau (design office prefix Ka) has more recently specialised in compact helicopters with coaxial rotors, suitable for naval service and high-speed operations.

History

Kamov was founded by Nikolai Ilyich Kamov, who started building his first rotary-winged aircraft in 1929, together with N. K. Skrzhinskii. Up to 1940, the year of Kamov plant establishment, they created many autogyros, including the TsAGI A-7-3, the only armed autogyro to see (limited) combat action.

From 2002 AFK Sistema controlled a 51% stake in the company, with MiG controlling the remaining 49%.[1] Kamov was sold to Oboronprom in 2005.[1]

Kamov merged with Mil and Rostvertol to form Russian Helicopters.[2] The Kamov brand name was retained, though the new company dropped overlapping product lines.
