Ilyushin, formally known as the Ilyushin Aviation Complex, is a leading Russian (formerly Soviet) aerospace design and manufacturing firm founded by aircraft designer Sergey Vladimirovich Ilyushin. It specializes in developing military and civilian aircraft, with iconic products including the Il-2 Shturmovik ground-attack plane, Il-76 strategic airlifter, and Il-96 wide-body airliner.

Key moments

  • January 13, 1933Ilyushin Design Bureau established by order of the Soviet aviation industry commissar
  • 1939First flight of the Il-2 Shturmovik, the most produced military aircraft in history
  • 1957Il-18 turboprop airliner enters service, becoming a global civilian and military transport workhorse
  • 1971First flight of the Il-76 strategic airlifter, which remains in active service worldwide
  • 1992Reorganized as a Russian joint-stock company after the dissolution of the Soviet Union
  • 2006Merged into the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), a state-owned Russian aerospace conglomerate

Ilyushin operates in a competitive global aerospace sector, with rivals varying by product segment:

  • For military strategic and tactical airlifters, it competes with Western manufacturers like Lockheed Martin (C-130, C-17) and Boeing, as well as fellow Soviet-era design bureau Antonov, which has faced operational and geopolitical challenges since the Cold War.
  • In the civilian wide-body airliner market, Ilyushin goes up against industry leaders Airbus and Boeing, alongside domestic peer Tupolev. Its international civilian market share remains limited compared to Western firms, with most sales going to former Soviet bloc countries.
  • Domestically within Russia, the company complements offerings from other UAC subsidiaries like Sukhoi (fighter jets) and Irkut (regional aircraft), though it occasionally overlaps in military procurement contracts.
  • Direct military airlifter competitors: Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Antonov
  • Civilian wide-body rivals: Airbus, Boeing, Tupolev
  • Strong loyal customer base in post-Soviet states for logistics and military use

The public joint stock company Ilyushin Aviation Complex,[1] operating as Ilyushin or as Ilyushin Design Bureau, is a Russian aircraft manufacturer and design bureau, founded in 1933 by Sergey Vladimirovich Ilyushin. Soviet/Russian nomenclature identifies aircraft from Ilyushin with the prefix "Il-". Ilyushin has its head office in Aeroport District, Northern Administrative Okrug, Moscow.[2]

History

Ilyushin was established under the Soviet Union. Its operations began on 13 January 1933, by order of P. I. Baranov, People's Commissar of the Heavy Industry and the Head of the Main Department of Aviation Industry. [3]

In 1970, the position of chief designer was taken by G. V. Novozhilov.

In 2006, the Russian government merged Ilyushin with Mikoyan, Irkut, Sukhoi, Tupolev, and Yakovlev under a new company named United Aircraft Corporation.[4]

In July 2014, it was reported that Ilyushin and Myasishchev would merge to form the United Aircraft Corporation business unit Transport Aircraft.[5][6]
