Angel Studios is a US-based independent entertainment company famous for its community-focused crowdfunding model, which allows audiences to invest in and select content for distribution. It focuses on faith-based and family-friendly stories, with core operations including film/TV production, streaming distribution, and fan-led project funding.

Key moments

  • 2021-04Officially founded as Angel Studios, Inc. in Delaware, USA
  • 2022-01Listed on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker symbol ANGX
  • 2022Revised funding agreement with the team behind hit series *The Chosen* after initial partnership disputes
  • 2024Greenlit third season of animated series *The Wingfeather Saga* via community crowdfunding

Angel Studios differentiates itself from traditional Hollywood studios and major streaming platforms through its unique community-driven model:

  1. Content Control vs. Traditional Studios: Unlike major studios that hold tight creative control, Angel gives creators full ownership and creative freedom while letting fans vote on which projects get funded and distributed.
  2. Direct Fan Engagement: Its platform connects creators directly with audiences, allowing fans to invest, promote, and shape the studio's slate of content, rather than relying solely on executive greenlighting.
  3. Faith-Based Niche Focus: While competitors like Netflix and Disney target broad mainstream audiences, Angel specializes in faith-friendly, values-driven content that fills a gap in the market for family-oriented, spiritually themed stories.
  4. Lower Upfront Risk: By using crowdfunding before full production, Angel reduces its own financial risk compared to traditional studios that fund projects entirely upfront.

Key competitors include:

  • Major streaming platforms: Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video (broad content focus, large budgets)
  • Independent studios: A24, Lionsgate (focus on auteur and indie content, no fan voting model)
  • Faith-based studios: Pure Flix (similar niche but less community-driven funding)

Angel Studios is a disruptive independent entertainment brand that has carved a distinct niche in the global media landscape through its community-focused crowdfunding and content selection model. Targeting underserved audiences of faith-based and family-friendly content, the brand has differentiated itself sharply from traditional Hollywood studios and large mainstream streaming platforms, building a reputation for creator autonomy and audience co-creation that resonates with its core consumer base. Its unique value proposition addresses unmet demand for values-aligned entertainment, positioning it as a compelling alternative to large studios that prioritize broad mainstream appeal.

The brand's strength is rooted in the deep loyalty of its community of investor-fans, who not only fund projects but also participate in content decisions and organic promotion. This community-centric model reduces upfront financial risk for the company while creating a built-in audience for every new release, a structural advantage that many competitors in the faith-based niche have failed to replicate. Unlike traditional studios that centralize creative control, Angel Studios' brand identity is tied directly to its democratic, fan-led approach, which generates strong word-of-mouth and organic growth.

In recent years, high-profile successes such as the box office hit Sound of Freedom have significantly expanded Angel Studios' brand recognition beyond its core niche, bringing it to mainstream attention in the U.S. entertainment market. This growth has put the brand on the radar of industry observers as a potential challenger to existing dynamics in independent production and distribution, though it still faces scaling challenges as it seeks to grow its output and reach.

Brand leadership

Score: 72/100

Angel Studios holds undisputed leadership in the niche of community-funded faith-based and family-friendly entertainment, outperforming competitors like Pure Flix in both audience engagement and innovative model development. Its fan-led greenlighting approach has redefined independent content development, setting an example for alternative production models in the industry, though it has not yet achieved broad market leadership comparable to major global streaming studios.

Audience brand interaction

Score: 88/100

As a brand built on direct audience participation, Angel Studios generates exceptionally high levels of interaction with its consumer base. Fans invest directly in projects, vote on which content gets produced, and actively promote releases to their networks, creating far deeper engagement than the passive viewership model common to most streaming platforms. This high level of interaction translates to strong brand loyalty and low customer acquisition costs for new releases.

Growth momentum

Score: 85/100

Angel Studios has recorded strong positive growth momentum over the past five years, fueled by breakout content successes and growing interest in its alternative production model. Its user base, funding volume, and content output have all expanded steadily, and the brand has gained increasing mainstream recognition in the U.S. entertainment market, indicating solid upward momentum for the foreseeable future.

Brand stability

Score: 65/100

Angel Studios' crowdfunding model reduces its upfront financial risk compared to traditional studios that fully fund projects before production, supporting moderate brand stability. However, as an independent company without the deep corporate backing of major media conglomerates, it faces greater financial and market volatility than established industry incumbents, and its niche focus leaves it exposed to shifts in demand within its core faith-based audience segment.

Brand age

Score: 40/100

Angel Studios is a relatively young brand, having formally launched in its current iteration in the early 2020s after evolving from earlier streaming operations. It lacks the multi-decade brand heritage and built-in recognition that older major entertainment brands enjoy, which limits its overall brand strength from a longevity perspective.

Entertainment industry profile

Score: 70/100

Angel Studios has built a strong industry profile as an innovative disruptor of traditional entertainment models, earning widespread attention from media observers and creators looking for alternative production partnerships. It is a leading name in the faith-based entertainment space, and its unique approach has reshaped conversations around audience involvement in content development, though it remains a small-to-mid-sized player overall in the broader global entertainment industry.

Global brand reach

Score: 35/100

Angel Studios currently focuses almost exclusively on the U.S. market, with very limited global distribution, localization, or marketing efforts. While its core content has niche appeal among faith-based audiences internationally, the brand has very low recognition outside of North America, and has not yet pursued meaningful global expansion, resulting in a low score for globalization.

Angel Studios, Inc. (doing business as Angel since 2025) is an American independent media company and film distribution studio based in Provo, Utah.[1] It produces and distributes films for theatrical release and operates the over-the-top video on-demand service Angel.[2] The streaming service is available worldwide and can be accessed via web browsers or via application software installed on smartphones, tablet computers, and smart TVs.[3]

Angel Studios emerged as the result of a bankruptcy reorganization from VidAngel,[4] using equity crowdfunding through Angel Funding[5] to finance its original productions by offering individual investors the opportunity to purchase shares in the company and its titles.[6] Content produced by Angel is distributed for free on their own streaming service.[2] Some titles are also available in other third-party streaming services as distribution deals.[7]

The studio produces and distributes "values-based" entertainment.[8] Much of its content carries Christian themes. Angel broke into film distribution with Sound of Freedom, which grossed over $250 million at the box office. Angel also distributed the first few seasons of the television series The Chosen.[9][10][11]

History

Early years as VidAngel

Angel Studios was originally founded as VidAngel in 2014 by Latter-Day Saint family members Neal Harmon, Jeffrey Harmon, Daniel Harmon, Jordan Harmon, and Benton Crane. According to Neal Harmon, the brothers wanted to be able to show any movie to their children without worrying about explicit material.[12] VidAngel provided a filtering service that allowed viewers to skip or mute scenes they did not want to watch from streamed movies and TV shows, by allowing viewers to set customized filters on graphic violence, nudity, and profanity.[13]

In 2016, VidAngel was sued by several major Hollywood studios for copyright violations, accusing the service of streaming unlicensed content that was not created by VidAngel.[14] VidAngel fought the lawsuit for several years, asserting its method was legal under the Family Movie Act of 2005, and then eventually reached a settlement in 2020.[15]

As a result of the lawsuit, the Harmon brothers decided to sell the filtering service business and instead focus on producing original content through equity crowdfunding.[16] The previous VidAngel service was sold to VidAngel Entertainment, and the company was rebranded as Angel Studios in 2021.[17]

Equity crowdfunding

In December 2016, VidAngel was undergoing a lawsuit. To raise money for operations and lawsuit costs, the company conducted a Regulation A+ securities offering with a goal of $5 million in investment. It met its goal after 28 hours and had crowdfunded over $10 million after five days.[18]

In 2017, the company conducted another Regulation A+ securities offering to crowdfund Season 1 of The Chosen.[19] Neal Harmon and Jeff Harmon worked together with Dallas Jenkins and Derral Eves to produce and stream a multi-season television series about the life of Jesus and his disciples. After a pilot episode was developed, the company raised $13 million in equity crowdfunding to finance the first season, the largest amount ever crowdfunded for a TV show.[20]

Also in 2017, a third foray into equity crowdfunding came from the launch of Dry Bar Comedy, a series of 52 original stand-up comedy sets filmed in Utah that are generally clean and performed by lesser-known comedians. Much of its content went viral, with Dry Bar Comedy videos receiving over two billion views as of 2021.[21]

Launch of Angel Studios

The success of Dry Bar Comedy and The Chosen gave way to a new business model that would allow the company to produce and distribute original content. The founders decided to focus on developing original content using its equity crowdfunding model and rebrand as Angel Studios.[22]

Angel Studios was named after the "angel investors" that participate in the new model that uses equity crowdfunding to finance original productions. These productions were distributed via the Angel Studios streaming platform for free. The company relied on a pay what you want revenue model, coined "Pay It Forward", in which viewers can optionally pay for the content if they choose to support it.[23]

In early 2021, Angel Studios purchased the domain angel.com for $2 million.[24] Soon after, Angel Studios launched an investment portal called Angel Funding that offered investment opportunities through Regulation Crowdfunding securities offerings.[25]

Several productions were successfully funded through the investment portal after its launch in 2021. Tuttle Twins, a show for children with educational themes on right-libertarian economic values raised $4.6 million in equity crowdfunding for its production.[26] The Wingfeather Saga, an animated series based on the award-winning book collection of the same name raised $1 million in the first 48 hours and $5 million in 20 days.[27] The Chosen, which was originally distributed through the VidAngel platform, was made available on Angel Studios for the launch of Season 2. The show became a viral hit worldwide.[28]

In 2022, Angel Studios raised $47 million in an investment round led by a Gigafund, a venture capital company.[29] In May 2022, the studio reported that it had $123 million in revenue, and that 50,000 people have invested over $100 million for production of new original content on its platform.[30] As of 2022, Angel Studios had 50,000 individual investors and had over $100 million worth of original content, including 12 titles, in production.[31]

In 2025, Angel Studios acquired Southport Acquisition in a reverse merger with the Connecticut SPAC[32] to become a publicly traded company valued at $1.6 billion, under the ticker symbol ANGX.[33] The company went public on September 11, 2025 and closed up 8.4% on its first day.[34]

Launch of the Angel Guild

The Angel Guild, launched in 2023, is a group of approximately 1 million members who review and vote on completed episodes and movies to help Angel Studios decide if they should take on a project. If a film or show's voting results meet the Guild's minimum eligibility requirements, the project enters into a due diligence process to determine its potential for distribution.[35]

Angel Guild members pay a monthly or annual membership fee to receive exclusive benefits such as access to Angel Studios’ entire library, new monthly releases, merchandise discounts, two complimentary movie tickets to every release, and more. The Angel Guild supports Angel Studios’ mission to share stories that amplify light.

Notable films greenlit by the Angel Guild include His Only Son, which earned $13 million at the worldwide box office, and Sound of Freedom, which grossed $250 million after Angel Guild members voted for its distribution.[36]

In 2025, Angel Studios signed a deal with U.K.'s only faith-based distributor, Kova Releasing,[37] and signed global distribution deals with studios in dozens of other countries.[38]

The Chosen

The Chosen, a streaming multi-season television series created by Dallas Jenkins and about the life of Jesus, was first produced under the VidAngel umbrella and later distributed by Angel Studios.[46] The series was supported by equity crowdfunding and raised over $13 million, the largest amount ever crowdfunded for a TV show.[46] Following the Season 3 finale in February 2023, The Chosen and Jenkins broke away from Angel Studios. The show is now handled by the Come and See Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation formed specifically to produce, license, and distribute The Chosen.[47]

Following months of legal arbitration between Angel Studios and The Chosen LLC, a decision by the arbitrator in favor of The Chosen was given in late May 2024. One day after Jenkins announced the ruling, Angel Studios' CEO Neal Harmon announced his company planned to appeal.[48][49]

It began as a series of 52 original stand-up comedy sets filmed in Utah that are generally clean and performed by lesser-known comedians.[50] Dry Bar Comedy has attracted a large social media following, particularly on YouTube. As of 2021, Dry Bar Comedy videos have attracted over 2 billion views.[21]

The Wingfeather Saga

Angel Studios produced an animated TV adaptation of The Wingfeather Saga, a fantasy book series for children and young adults written by Andrew Peterson. Investors contributed $5 million to produce the first season.[27]

Feature films

As of, Angel's distributed feature films include His Only Son, a March 2023 live-action drama retelling the biblical story of Abraham and Isaac produced by RockBridge Productions,[51][52] Sound of Freedom, produced by Santa Fe Films and released in July 2023, and The Shift, a sci-fi film[53] released in late 2023 starring Neal McDonough, Sean Astin, Kristoffer Polaha, and Emily Rose, which was Angel Studios's first original theatrical feature film.[54]

David, an animated film about the eponymous biblical hero was originally set to be released in November 2025.[55] However, in October 2024, Slingshot Pictures terminated its distribution agreement with Angel, citing "multiple alleged incurable contract breaches".[56] Slingshot filed a lawsuit against Angel in March 2025 and tried seeking a new distributor for David.[57] One year after the agreement was terminated, Angel Studios and 2521 Entertainment acquired the film and its prequel TV series, Young David. The film released in theatres on December 19, 2025.[58]

Sound of Freedom

On July 3, 2023, Angel Studios released the film Sound of Freedom as its first international theatrical release.[59][60] Directed by Alejandro Monteverde, the film stars Jim Caviezel, Mira Sorvino, and Bill Camp. The film was a box office success, earning over $250 million worldwide.[61][62] However, the film also attracted controversy due to allegations of exaggerated ticket sales,[63][64][65] challenges to the credibility of its subject Tim Ballard,[66] and its ties to the QAnon conspiracy theory.[67][68][69][70]
